The 2009 Rocca di Montegrossi San Marcellino is showing significantly more depth, yet also freshness than the last time I tasted it, with balsamic tinged black cherry, giving way to Asian spice, wild herbs, hints of animal musk and brown sauce (think sauerbraten). Velvety textures flood the palate, showing notable savoriness, as mineral-infused dark red fruits are energized by vibrant acidity with a hint of orange citrus that pops right toward the close. The finish is long, showing adolescent tannins, which provide just enough tension, as it tapers off to notes of roasted plum, hints of tobacco and sage. It does show a bit more advanced than I’d expect, but this is a far superior bottle over the last one I tasted. Bravo. #chianticlassic #chianti #tuscanwine #italy — 6 years ago
Pure Sangiovese from Montemercurio in Montepulciano. Deep ruby coloured in the glass. Traditional Sangiovese flavours, including cherries, spice, earthiness and a hint of balsamic. Good mouth feel and acidity leaving a robust finish. The best grapes from the south west facing vineyards are hand harvested, spend 18-20 days on the skins, 18 months in large Slovenian oak vats, another 6 months in smaller vats and 12 months in bottle before release. #italianredwine #tuscanwine #sangiovese #montepulciano #montemercurio #messaggero #nobiledimontepulciano #vinorosso #italianwine — 8 years ago
This 2011 Petra is a varietal Sangiovese from vineyards near the town of Suvereto, on the hills of the Val di Corona. A modern winery in a region the with vine growing roots (no pun intended) going back to the Greeks and Etruscans. Even after an hour in the decanter this wine has not fully opened. In spite of that, it is still very smooth on the palate with a noticeable earthiness, leather, tobacco and quite a bit of licorice on the finish. Good and juicy acidity, yet tannins are a little tight. Will definitely benefit from a little more ageing.

Starting to oxidize. Ripe fruit. Strawberry jam, cornmeal and dried flowers. Dry in general with pronounced tannins. Not a huge fan. #brunellodimontalcino #tuscanwine #italianwines #overpriced — 10 years ago
Young and fresh from the glass with black cherry, cranberry, roses and poppy. Great vintage holding up phenomenally! Black and bing cherry palate with soft, textural black olive, bright raspberry, lingonberry and catalyst salinity. Juicy! Great acidity makes this seem so young in every way, the only hint is a slight fade to brick, but mostly unvarying rim to rim.

Heavy floral notes with lavender and violet, carnation, cherry blossom and red rose, booming amid dried black cherry espresso and cocoa, though distinctly separate. Dark toasted sesame, rye bread, and crumbled earth. Bright cherry palate turns dusty in all the right ways, leaning into cocoa nib and espresso oils. Lovely and dry with dried cran and red currant but exhibits miles of lingering blood orange citrus and crystalline cherry. Gorgeous. Eternally evolving and all of it amazing. The concrete egg has made something ethereal that also shows a mysterious depth. Great range.

2007 Orma Toscana from Tenuta Sette Ponti. Bordeaux blend from Tuscany. 40% Cab Franc 20% Cab Sauv 40% Merlot. The wine spent 12 months in French bariques and another 12 in the bottle. Dark berries, spice, with hints of Licorice and chocolate. Well integrated tannins and a nice full finish. Should drink well for another 4-5 years. #tuscanwine #italianredwine #supertuscan #maremma #orma #tenutasetteponti #bordeauxblend #2007tuscanvintage #goodredwine #nobleestates — 8 years ago
Gagliole is an ancient property sitting at 1640 feet above seal level. HOwever, having undergone a vine reintegration process, the vines are no older than 30 years. State Archives in Siena mention the estate as far back as 994 A.D. The Sangiovese vines enjoy exposure to the south-southwest, nestled between the gentle Chianti hills. A blend of 90% Sangiovese and 10% merlot, it is an enjoyable and easy going red. Vibrant cherry, plum, spice and a hint of leather together with well balanced tannins give the expected crisp Chianti Classico flavours sought by many. Approachable now or within the next 3-5 years. Great value!

One of my favorite wine memories is the night I had dinner sitting next to Isole e Olena's Paolo De Marchi. We talked about his love for his family, his passion for winemaking and drank a lot of his incredible wine. I'm really enjoying this #ChiantiClassico tonight with Vento d'Estate cheese from @olssonsfinefoods #isoleeolena #paolodemarchi #Sangiovese @princetoncorkscrew #TuscanWine — 11 years ago

The 2015 Fontodi Chianti Classico is an over-performer in every possible way, showing masses of black cherry and raspberry with dusty minerals, hints of cedar and new leather. There’s a cool-toned precision beneath it’s warm vintage fruit, with grippy tannins which quickly firm up the experience, while zesty acids tug at the cheeks. A minute later and I can still feel it’s youthful poise, along with lingering tart berries and hints of spice. #fontodi #chianticlassico #sangiovese #tuscanwine — 6 years ago
2013 Petra Potenti Rosso Toscana IGT. 100% Cabernet from Tuscany. Lots of black fruit and still some sour cherry to add a little tartness. Some spice, leather and tobacco round out the mouth feel. Still lots of acidity and tannic structure. Easily good for another 5-6 years. Love this wine. #italianwines #tuscanwine #cabernet #italianredwine #toscana #petra #potenti #2013tuscanvintage #drinkitalianwine #italiancabernetsauvignon — 8 years ago
Villa Cafaggio Cortaccio. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. A nice garnet colour in the glass. This 2008 is lovely. From the Panzano Estate, this wine was aged for 18 months in new French Oak. The result? A well balanced Tuscan Cabernet that delivers flavours of leather, tobacco, herbs and some earthiness. Well balanced acidity and tannins. Lovely wine.

Still quite young and a little harsh on the palate. Undertones of cherry, leather and a little barnyard. Still a little tense and tannic, but should benefit from more bottle time. Should start to drink well in 2018.

Rosemary-mint, forest floor, cherrywood, dark river pebbles with a super-clean, lime on cedar over black cherry nose. Feels light and earthen, but reverses on the palate into an oaky and black-cherry-driven, brooding, and expansive wine with licorice, perfect tannins exhibiting racy, chewy and massive facets in a complementary staccato. Impressive. #Gaiaccia #toscana #FattoriaLeSorgenti #Firenze #TuscanWine — 11 years ago

Lighter-styled Brunello offering a red cherry mint, smoky soft plum and bruised rose petal; lightest pepper, poppyseed.
Vague notes of banana and spun sugar. Tart cherry, raspberry and oregano on the palate, cedar-cigar, grainy tannins and roobios. Good Brunello for the money!
