Popped and poured, no formal notes. Despite its relative youth, the 2017 Sassicaia is showing very nicely right now. To my palate, this does as good a job as any in deftly straddling New and Old World…and just leans enough towards its structure and non-fruit characteristics to give it a sense of place. To be clear, there is plenty of fresh and delicious fruit, it’s just that the structure and the firmness of the tannin and acid is so “favoloso”. Drinking well in its youth but should drink very well through 2042.

A library photo used for the 5th wine at the Downs Club Super Tuscan Dinner. We had the 2017 - no detailed notes but unsurprisingly the WOTN. Beautiful perfume showing Roses and Cigar box - could be picked as Bordeaux in a blind tasting. 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc. A medium to full bodied palate.

what a phenomenal job the crew did with what Mother Nature threw them ~ this is an elegant & approachable example of Sassicaia ~ upon pulling the cork Mediterranean scrub & herbs fill the nose and flavors of red licorice and Razzles pop on the palate ~ in time the red fruits become less candied and the the scrub & herbs, along w tobacco leaf & hints of gravel, finish the flavor ~ though a samurai sword of acidity slices through!

If you’re looking for breadth this doesn’t have it ~ but what is there is focused and sings!

The 2017 Sassicaia shows the natural richness and intensity of the year while retaining its mid-weight sense of balance and overall poise. A burst of super-ripe red cherry/plum fruit makes a strong opening statement. Mocha, cinnamon, leather and dried herbs appear later, adding aromatic lift. The 2017 is a fairly immediate Sassicaia. Even so, it has enough energy to drink well for a number of years. Production is down 35%, a combination of naturally low yields, dehydration on the vine and then selection in the cellar. Most of the fruit comes from the estate’ hillside vineyards, older parcels that resisted the conditions better. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, January 2021)

#overrated tasted it blind with 3 other #supertuscan wines ranging from 40€, 75€ and these and #ornellaia (the best). all the other 3 were better. This was light intensity aromas on the nose, it really the least aromatic and then on the palate it was acidic just a little disjointed and unbalanced.

Bordeaux blend with a distinctly Italian signature. Elegant, complex. Feels like a ‘fine wine’.

Read the reviews on the 2017 and was intrigued. Opened in the morning and sampled throughout day while raking leaves. Finished at dinner. The wine is precise, balanced and interesting. The tannins dominate and are refined, supple and then linger. The fruit is primarily plum with cherry. Tobacco comes a bit later. No clues how this will evolve but. note to self, wait till 2024 or later to rake the leaves again.

Wine world seems to love this wine. On one hand, it’s brilliant, but for me, a little too much going on.
