I do love second labels. Usually terrific values and excellent wines, they are definitely go to purchases.
Deep dark burgundy with light cherry flecks. An exquisite nose featuring blackcurrant, smoke, and licorice. Oak and rose petals entice. This, of course, requires proper aeration which reveals some additional notes of earth, mushrooms, and green peppers.
Blended simultaneously as its prestigious older sibling, there is definitely a level of elegance and refinement here that’s a bit uncommon for many second label bottles. A Left Bank beauty, this is half Cabernet Sauvignon/half Merlot aged 14 months in French oak. The palate follows the nose closely with more earth notes and blue fruits. A soft vegetal quality in the mouth. Medium long finish with nice spice leaves you wanting more and more and more.

The 1945 Haut-Brion is poured against the legendary 1945 Mouton and might just have come out on top. It is difficult to put this wine into words. Showing modest bricking, it presents a sublime bouquet of vibrant red fruit, warm gravel, wilted rose petals and a hint of earthenware. It is crystalline in terms of definition. The palate follows suit with pitch-perfect acidity, a very slight, refreshing hint of balsamic, and finely chiseled tannins. Beguiling in every way, this is a profound Haut-Brion that is absolutely flawless. Tasted at Koala's 1945 dinner. (Neal Martin, Vinous, May 2020)

30 years old. Of course it shows a bit its age, of course there is an orange rim in the glass, of course the nose is mostly tertiary aromas (wet forest soil, mushroom, earth, leather...) but there is still plenty of life in there! There is still fruit (strawberry) and some dried, fading rose petal scent too. The secondary are still here too with tobacco and a bit of cedar. The palate is still well designed by a wonderful acid backbone with a rather wide and long drive that lasts a very long while. Some strawberry, red forest berries, some good grip, some dusty tannins that integrated fully now and the fresh finish which lasts with notes of rose, fruit and a bit of mint. Not the best I've had but a nice tasting experience with the family. — 7 years ago
Lovely and light rose. Easy to drink as it’ll be refreshing on warmer evenings...or afternoons. Tasted with Tina at home as I prepped to return to work. — 7 years ago

TCWS. Took a bit of time to open up and maybe a little on the sweet side but still an enjoyable drink. — a year ago

Nose with dense dark rose and dark cherry. Palate with juicy acidity and well balanced approachable dark fruit, leather, some tobacco, and mouth tingling spice. Moderate long finish with a tough of grippy tannins at the end. Overall a unique and interesting Bordeaux. — 4 years ago
Fairly deep rose gold colour. Quite rich with impressive length on the palate. Some tangerine and an almost tea leaf note. I much prefer the Huet molleaux wines but nice to try. — 5 years ago
The 2017 Haut-Bailly matured in 50% new oak and bottled at the end of April. It has a fragrant bouquet with blackcurrant, wild strawberry, wilted rose petal and light truffle scents emerging with time. This is a less powerful nose than recent vintages, but I appreciate the understated style. The palate is medium-bodied with rounded, saturated tannin. There is good acidity here, quite spicy in the mouth with a gentle, if not overly complex finish. It is the kind of Haut-Bailly that will drink comparatively early, though it has the substance to last for 20+ years. (Neal Martin, Vinous, February 2020)

Light salmon color. Tart on the palate with a mineral backbone. A satisfying acid finish. Clean and crisp, a classic French style rose’. — 7 years ago
2018 vintage. Open for business. Tasted three bottles with consistent notes. All three decanted. No sed. Medium/medium-heavy body. Smoky, plummy nose. Bright Rainier cherry mixed in with nose impressions along with some candied raspberry and astringent rose petals. Wanted slightly more tannin involvement but methinks they’re smoking ciggies, playing cards and just waiting for the kids to fall asleep. 7.27.24. — 2 years ago
The 2012 Les Carmes Haut-Brion was the first vintage with whole bunches (40%) and 18 months in barrel. It was the introductory vintage under current winemaker Guillaume Pouthier. This is much more enticing on the nose after the 2011: well-defined black cherries, cola, peppermint, light rose petal scents and a hint of marmalade that emerges with time. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, more freshness and tension than the 2011, and frankly, you would never be able to tell there was whole bunch here. This appears to be maturing with style and panache, but it will give another decade or more of drinking pleasure. Tasted at the Les Carmes Haut-Brion vertical at the château. This is solid. Dry. Cantaloupe. Strawberries. — 4 years ago
From a great looking bottle with a mid-shoulder fill and an appropriate plug. Reddish amber color, it looks amazing and smells even better. Exotic perfume with notes of rose petals, tobacco leaf, cola, leather saddle, Cuban cigar and some menthol. Some cranberry and walnut notes develop too. Lots of red fruit. Slow-ox'd it for 4 hours, then gave it 30 min in a decant, then back in the bottle for enjoyment through the evening. This never tired, and showed continual improvement until it was gone. Drinking history. Decided to go side by side... 45 vs 61 vs 89. Tonight the 61 was better than the 45 but not by much. The 89 may eclipse both in 30 years tho. (Bday 10 of 13) — 6 years ago

From a 375. I bought this one 15 years ago for $12 and I’ve been waiting to open it on a Tuesday night with some take out Chinese. I finally found the night! At first, it was very tight and backward. Huge tannins that I thought would never fade. I figured it was a 2003 that was off center And funky. After 30 minutes it was still tight but the black fruit rose out of the glass and the tannins faded revealing a beautiful claret that was a little hard around the edges but offered immense pleasure. Fun to find something that was laying around so long — 6 years ago
