Chianti classico from Banfi and this reliable producer always delivers quality. It's typical: high acidity, but medium tannins, very dry. A cherry, leather and touch of vanilla. — 15 days ago
Fattoria Selvapiana – Chianti Rufina 2016
Chianti Rufina DOCG – Tuscany, Italy 🇮🇹
Overview:
Made predominantly from Sangiovese, Selvapiana is one of the benchmark producers of the Chianti Rufina subzone—often overshadowed by Chianti Classico but known for its elegance and longevity.
Aromas & Flavors:
Red berries lead the way, with cherry and cranberry joined by subtle wild herbs, dried flowers, and a touch of earthy minerality. With age, a gentle floral lift and savory nuance have emerged.
Mouthfeel:
Medium-bodied with rounded acidity and fine tannins, delivering a graceful and balanced structure. The 2016 vintage has shown itself remarkably well, aging more elegantly than many would expect outside of Chianti Classico.
Food Pairings:
Excellent with Tuscan staples such as bistecca alla Fiorentina, roasted pork with herbs, or a simple pasta with tomato and pecorino.
Verdict:
A refined and elegant Chianti Rufina that proves this appellation can age beautifully. Balanced, expressive, and surprisingly complex for its category. — a month ago
Concur with WS review with respect to the flavor profile, albeit with a slightly lower score. Complex set of flavors. Potentially age-worthy.
WS:93. Featuring black cherry, blueberry, mint, iron and Tuscan scrub flavors, this solid red is built for aging, with ripe fruit returning on the long finish. All the components are there -- this just needs time. Sangiovese and Merlot. Best from 2024 through 2040. 19,100 cases made, 4,000 cases imported.

A nice lighter cherry that is dry but with appropriate fruit. Great with pasta and red sauce. October 2025. — 20 days ago
Really enjoyed this with spaghetti bolognese — 21 days ago
Seriously good Chianti. Black cherry, candied orange, tobacco leaf, nice acid and full body. Maybe even too good for pizza…but good with pizza — a month ago
Just a solid chianti Riserva, drank with NY pizza then again the next day after vacummed and store in fridge with pollo ala francese,. Was great both days. — 4 days ago
I have enjoyed many vintages of the excellent single vineyard Reserva (Bucerchiale) from Selvapiana, but the fruity 2018 is one of the more satisfying ones. Perfumed red and black fruit aromatics soar from the stemware. It is Medium >full, balanced and well structured with crisp acidity and light tannins at the satisfying finish. This Sangiovese star from the Rufina appellation East of Florence, always punches well above its price point. If you’re unaware of it, time to check it out. (It continues to identify it as 2013, but please note it is 2018.)

This up-front, fleshy Chianti is drinking really nicely right now. Pretty extroverted nose shows dark, macerated cherry, iodiney minerality, and a little loamy soil. In the mouth it’s pretty full, with a big whack of fruit initially, some tertiary notes developing and becoming apparent in the back half of the palate. Decent acids and still some soft tannin providing some scaffolding. I’d like a bit more linearity and persistence in the finish but for a ‘18 it’s darn nice. — a month ago
