Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru Pinot Noir 1995

1995 vintage. Not decanted. Appropriate color. Good fill and cork. Beautiful, integrated nose. Flavors same. Medium-medium heavy body. Dark fruit, earth and spice coalescing into a unified experience now. This is at the top of the bell curve for the next half-decade and probably longer. Still, undeniable power under the hood and completely bewitching. 05.28.25. — 6 days ago

@Scott@Mister A’s-San Diego These Grand Cru Rousseau’s are incredibly long living aren’t they. Certainly power under the hood as you say.

@Scott@Mister A’s-San Diego Could I ask why no decanting? Sediment was minimal?

@Bob McDonald I have run across quite a few Burgundy drinkers that are adamant about not having their Burgs decanted. I get it if it’s a bleepy vintage (this wasn’t). A lot of people are convinced that these “force of nature” wines such as this, DRC stuff and 1st growth BDX will have the magic evaporate suddenly and be left with nothing. Perhaps if you’re opening wines older than 1961 BDX, but imho, wines like this need a bit of soft yoga stretching in a decanter after being straight-jacketed for 3-6 decades-esp Bordeaux. People are PNP’ing their great wines and drinking them over the course of an hour or so without a decant The vast majority of these upper level wines will taste better with another 30 mins-3 hours of airtime.

Clos des Ruchottes Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru Pinot Noir 2001

2001 vintage. Not decanted. Nice fill and cork. Youthful nose of eucalyptus/spearmint and orange peel. Medium-medium heavy body. Just so fresh. Tasted more like a 3-4 year old Burg instead of a 24 yo one. Excellent length of finish filled with sandalwood/tree bark, clove, cinnamon and raspberry. This specimen needed another 15-20 years to “grow up.” 05.28.25. — 6 days ago

Auxey-Duresses Pinot Noir

Outrageous depth and complexity. Agree that it drinks more like a Pommard or Volnay 1er cru. — 5 months ago

Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Pinot Noir 2014

2014 vintage. Not decanted. Tasted after 20 mins open. Light body with enduring orange peel zest, clove, raspberry and wisps of tobacco. Impressions were that of a wine with another decade of age. Delicious and gorgeous. 05.28.25. — 6 days ago
