After the Chiroubles, I taste this second Cuvée from the Domaine; confirming the admirable know-how of these winegrowers who love a job well done. Biodynamic Fleurie which does justice to the appellation: nose of red fruits and cherries accompanied by rocky floral nuances and something that resembles peppermint. (Vintage effect?). The palate confirms this generosity, with a carbonic maceration that suits the Gamay grape so well, without being prominent here. The finish unfolds on roasted and typical sour cherry notes. It’s very greedy. Immediate pleasure at a very affordable price.
— 4 years ago

This is the 2019 Domaine Ballorin Marsannay “Les Amoureux.” It’s yet another value-priced 2019 that is dangerously delicious. Nose is the pure essence of Pinot Noir. Vibrant, sappy, ripe dark cherries, a musky, sweet note of violets, and a slight moist humus (not hummus) note. Just captivating. In the mouth, it’s more youthful and tightly wound than the nose would suggest. There’s an initial whack of sexy Pinot fruit, but it tightens up fast, with zingy acids and fine-grained chalky tannins. Long finish. This will easily improve over the next few years. Les Amoureux by Xavier Vignon, another single-vintage wine in the Arcane portfolio, is a beautiful embodiment of the southern Rhône from the spectacular 2016 vintage. A blend of 80% Grenache, with the 20% split between Mourvèdre, Cinsault and Caladoc, and sourced from the AOCs of Gigondas, Lirac, Vacqueyras, Beaumes-de-Venise and Rasteau, it’s a fragrant but powerful wine that balances bright red fruit, dollops of garrigue and a smokey character with a good amount of acidity and tannin characteristic of a young Rhône wine. A basic Côtes du Rhône given the blend of multiple terroirs, this is the finest of Vignon’s wines that I’ve tasted to date and it should age well for the next decade. — 4 years ago
