Vinho Branco White Blend 2021

When in the Azores drink… lovely Azorean whites, especially from Pico. Like w many Portuguese whites ( & reds), a blend- of what, I don’t know ( probably Verdelho). Salty, volcanic, & some serious yellow fruits. Bought in local supermarket for about 18$. Paired w local Sao Jorge cheese, local cured ham, & artisanal sesame crackers. Damn. — 2 months ago

Rocca Bernarda

Gigante Colli Orientali del Friuli Sauvignon 2015

Seven years after the vintage, this one shows no signs of slowing down. On the nose, green grass, tomato plant, papaya... On the palate, papaya again... Big mineral... Good acidity. Medium finish. Crisp, bright, and alive. Very enjoyable. — 3 years ago

Lancel Creek Vineyard Chardonnay 2018

Shay A
9.3

I’ve opened a few Ferren Frei Rd chards (normally in the 4-5yr range) and have enjoyed them, but this was my first Lancel Creek. With the release coming up in a few weeks, I wanted to check in and figure out the profile. I’m between a 93-94 here.

Made by Matt Courtney (formerly at Marcassin, also winemaker at Arista). Beautiful straw colored in the glass with maybe a tinge of green, the aromatics are honeysuckle, sweet lemon, and sea salted almonds. I found this to be very similar to the Frei Rd in regards to acidity. So nervy all the way through. Totally coastal, but with a soft touch of rich fruit. Also similar to the Frei Rd, this is lemon everything (fresh squeezed lemon, lemon cream, lemon scone) but the mineral profile is more enhanced here. There’s a stone/slate vibe toward the finish that keeps this light on its feet. Oak is soft and plays a contributing role, not a dominating one.

I enjoyed this at pop and pour, then revisited 2-3hrs later and found the acidity had calmed down a bit. Definitely give this a decant now if possible, or hold a few more years.

As always, great notes. I’m going to look for this one. How are his Pinots?

@Deborah M : They fall a bit down the middle in regards to style. They aren’t bombastic in flavor, but they aren’t lean either. A little bit more richness compared to Rivers Marie.

Broc Cellars

Frei Vineyard Happī Chenin 2023

On the 2022 vintage, my notes said “low acidity”, but this 23 is quite zesty. Maybe I had a slightly off bottle, or the dish was tangy. Tasting apple and lemon that I don’t remember. Still feeling salinity and some pear. Great Broc white! — 5 months ago

Caves São João

Frei João Bairrada Baga Blend 1985

In beautiful shape, better than I remember the last bottle being. Dried red and black fruits, dry dusty tannins, forest floor, dried porcini mushroom and old leather umami nodes, cedar, dried herbs. Did I mention it’s dry? But it’s a beautiful wine, the flavor profile exudes sun baked warmth but the alcohol clocks in at less than 12% so it doesn’t fatigue the palate — 3 years ago

Frei Road Vineyard Chardonnay 2017

Shay A
9.4

This 2017 is less opulent, more compact, and tightly coiled compared to the 2016. Because of that, I followed this wine over two days.

On day one, this was tart and tangy…almost steely and too powerful. Day two saw this blossom and expand on the palate. The tart/tangy vibe is still there but it’s accompanied by a deep richness. Everything about this Chardonnay is lemon driven…lemon oil, lemon scone, powdered lemon tart bar, especially on the nose. There is a nervy vein of acidity at the core carrying notes of pineapple and white peach, but never pushed too far to the ripe side. One of those wines that retains freshness with the richness. If popping now, decant 1-2hrs or hold another few years, and enjoy the 2016 before opening this 2017!
