Schramsberg Vineyards

Cuvée French Laundry Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Chardonnay 2020

Jack and Jamie Davies revived the historic vineyards and cellars in 1965. Today, their son Hugh, continues their mission. 100% Chardonnay pale straw color with aromas of stone fruits, floral and citrus notes. A terrific crisp sparkler with crisp apple, peach and lemon flavors, fine mousse with tiny bubbles. Tangy acidity on a long finish ending with a yeasty creamy character. Nice! — 9 days ago

Château Léoville-Las Cases

Grand Vin de Leoville du Marquis de las Cases Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 1986

See previous note from 96 weeks ago where I said that I would drink the last one when my son Hugh was home from NY (born 1987) which came to pass last night. Overall not as impressive as the previous tasting but retains its silky tannin structure. Very dark in colour - opaque. Notes of cassis and pipe tobacco - overall dusty without the depth of fruit of the previous tasting. Just medium bodied. Tasting Book recommend a drinking window till 2035 which I would not agree with. Leads me to think I will be drinking my bottles of 86 Mouton sooner rather than later. — 3 years ago

@Michael Herzog It’s a good idea to do this I think Michael. We also have a daughter Georgie who was born in 1989. We will be drinking an old Bordeaux from that year sometime in the next few days before they both return to work overseas.

@Bill Bender Nice to hear from you Bill. We are well and I hope you are as well. We ended up having an 89 Mouton when the kids were home. Wonderful aromatics. Weather cooling down. Hope it’s warm enough to go for a surf over Easter. Cheers.

Methode Traditionnelle Brut Blanc de Noirs Pinot Noir 2019

Jack and Jamie Davies revived the historic vineyards and cellars in 1965, with a goal to produce world-class sparkling wines, passing torch to their son Hugh. A blend of 82% Pinot Noir and 18% Chardonnay (blend varies each year) with stone and berry fruit aromas and earthy spice. On the palate the light mousse shows raspberry, peach and mango flavors with nutty biscuit and slight baking spice notes. Long finish, lively acidity ending with citrus and yeasty tones. — 15 days ago

Hugh Gruyere Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2010

Limited notes from my 70th birthday. From magnum. A classic Yarra Valley Cabernet Blend which is early in its drinking window. Medium bodied with red stalky tomato leaf savoury fruits. — 2 years ago

Hamilton Russell Vineyards

Hemel-En-Aarde Valley Pinot Noir

Slightly heavier Pinot noir, ripened blackberries, plums, liquorice, cinnamon and toffee. Does not taste like a typical French or Aust/NZ Pinot. Elegant tannins and acidic. Taste more like a light right bank — 3 months ago

9.7

Double blind wine tasting. 3 Whites and 3 Reds:

1. ‘18 Hamilton Russell Chard - WOTN across both whites and reds - complex, refined, fruit integrated with honey, oak, butter, cream, camomile.

2. ‘20 Hartenberg The Eleanor Chard - big wine that could use a few years. Nice fruit and lovely acidity. Mix between a White Burg and Rhone Blend.

3. ‘22 Far Niente Chard - potential, very young, not the best QPR. Reminded me of young Paul Hobbs single vineyard Chards.

1. ‘12 Giacomo Fenocchio 90 di Riserva Barolo - aged showed through nicely, but still lively with dark cherries and ample tannins.

2. ‘20 Vilafonte - decanted, but young and an absolutely massive wine. Black fruit, chewy, with decent sweetness.

3. ‘02 Origin Red Blend - nose of black tar and cigars. Zero fruit and big tar, tobacco, and bbq flavors. Bigger wine than I was expecting.

Great night with great friends!
