Château Picque Caillou

Blanc Pessac-Léognan Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend 2020

2020 vintage. One of the estates that are so close to the city of Bordeaux that you might call them urban wineries. Luckily, some very famous estates (ever heard of Haut-Brion?!) are a perfect barrier to urbanisation. While nowhere near the quality of its more illustrious neighbours, the 2020 white Picque Caillou is definitely worth our attention. It is not clear whether this is 100% Sauvignon Blanc, or a blend with some Sémillon, but on day one it smelled very much like Sauvignon Blanc, while on day two more exotic fruit popped up ( which I normally associate more with Sémillon, but maybe there isn't any in the blend). Light golden colour. Pineapple, grapefruit, and a hint of fennel and beeswax. In the mouth it is more about intensity than elegance, but it definitely has character. Abv. 13%. The estate was just bought by Laurent Marti, a business man who made his fortune in textiles, and who owns the local rugby club. — 3 days ago

Till havskräftor och räkor. Bästa vinet hitintills. Känner en hel del aprikos som gifter sig så alldeles särskilt utmärkt till skaldjuren. — 7 years ago

Virginia King's Ransom 2020

Clear, medium ruby in color; on the nose, it's clean with pronounced primary and secondary aromas of blackberries, cassis, and tabacco; on the palate, it's dry with high acidity, high tannins, medium alcohol, full body, and pronounced primary and secondary flavors of black cherries, blueberries, eucalyptus, and wet gravel with a long finish. This wine is balanced, intense, and complex. Overall, I rate this wine as outstanding. Nellie likes it, too. — 9 months ago

Château Lynch-Bages

Grand Cru Classé Pauillac Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2005

This was fantastic, strong, and yet still seemingly understated. Although I am no fortune teller, this seemed strong and young. I couldn’t place all the flavors I experienced, but to my palate there was raspberry, blackberry, smoked meats, soil after a rain, and portobello mushroom all matched with a beautiful color to stare at between sips. Long pauses to enjoy the long finish. — 2 years ago

Colle Massari

Rosso Riserva Montecucco Sangiovese Blend 2016

Quite nice. A good value when I bought it and even better now as it’s going for $19. From the owners of Poggio di Sotto which we had the good fortune to taste at recently. Quite complete. Tannins at this point are still pretty forbidding, but at this price a good one to stock away for the future. — 4 years ago

King's Clay

Special Reserve California Malbec 2020

Delicious. Aromatic, deep berry notes. Slight spice towards the finish, which is a pleasant pairing to how sweet the berry notes are. Not a typical dry Merlot. Would pair excellently with many meals, however, it is so flavorful and fruity that it can be sipped on its own. Also recommended to pair with desserts, particularly a dark chocolate. — 5 years ago

Soldiers of Fortune Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

I look for a bacon/autumn leaves flavor in North American Pinot Noir, and this one delivers that in spades. That note is what is prominent on the nose and also comes through on the palette. There is some raspberry as well, but this is mostly a bacon/autumn leaves bomb. — 7 years ago
