Hunter Valley Sémillon 2022

Ming L
9.0

The nose is reminiscent of a SB with nice mix of citrus, tropical, and melon fruits with hint of hay. The initial entry feels like a Chablis that’s acidic and steely, but the body gains weight in the glass and there is hint of sweetness and white floral toward the finish.
Not much experience with 100% Semillon, but this is very nice.

Lovedale Hunter Valley Sémillon 2013

Medium lemon colour with green reflexes . On the nose quite intense lime syrup , lemon peel, with honey , green herbs and a candle wax note . On the palate lime cordial and pithy lemon rind notes with a honied richness. Quite high , almost saline acidity . Quite intense with good length and slightly honied , toasty , herbal tinged finish. This is drinking well now though still showing quite young . Drink over the next 10-15 years — 4 months ago

Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz 2021

No formal notes. Bright bright ruby colour , pink rim . Quite high toned red fruit with a touch of smoked spice on the nose , attractive and inviting . Strawberry , red plum , raspberry , orange rind and black pepper on the palate , mirroring the nose . Very good depth , rounded , velvety but noticeable tannins . Good fresh acidity, detailed and precise on the palate . Saline touch on the long finish with balanced alcohol. This is at the beginning of a long life , though it’s quality is clear . Even better in 10 years and last a further 10-15 — 5 months ago

They have some hard to get old vine Shiraz like Old Patch; 4 Acres and Johnnos Shiraz. Unless you’re a member I’ve had to buy through retailers who charge a lot more. Perhaps offered at Cellar Door but production would be small.

Yes most of the limited wines they had sold out of … which I suppose is no surprise . But they did have a few older vintages of some of the Semillons, which I managed to purchase !

Hunter Valley Chardonnay 2021

Tasting from a week ago at Mick’s place. This was very restrained for a Hunter Valley Chardonnay. Nothing like Tyrrells Vat 47 for example which is usually ripe and buttery. Light to medium weight - lemony and citrus than stone fruit. An excellent Chardonnay nevertheless. — 7 days ago

Hunter Valley Sémillon 2012

Light lemon colour . Beeswax , lemongrass , lemon peel on the nose. On the palate good body, with lemon and lime notes , beeswax and a herbaceous tinge . Still fresh acidity , this comes across as really quite young still, without the honied, toasty notes you expect with age . Still quite light on its feet, elegant and relatively lean . The length is ok , and perhaps lacks a little intensity on the mid palate , but for the basic Semillon this shows well . Drink now and over the next 10 years — 5 months ago

Tyrrell's Sémillon Vat 1 2017

Quite light with green tinges . Pretty taught on the nose , intense with lemon , lime , almost a struck match note to this . Intense and tight on the palate , touch of beeswax with the lemon and lime notes . High fresh acidity , though with enough body to cover the bones , lovely balance . This is still really young , but very promising . Come back in 10 years , will last well a further 10-15. — 5 months ago
