Pouilly-Fuissé Les Chevrières 2020

2024/7/17-18. Now a premier cru vineyard. Still very young, a bit yogurt and lactic initially, which clams but remains as a roundness complementing the high-toned character. There’s lemon tart, flowers, yogurt cream, butter, chalk, and some vanilla and mace. Very balanced and drinkable on the palate — 2 years ago

Les Cras Macon La Roche-Vineuse Chardonnay 2015

2022/5/28 with tai sashimi 2 ways, tomato in dashi, chicken and new onion in pea and white miso soup, etc. There may be some bias since I’ve been looking for bottles like this since being reminded of how good classicist white Burgundy is with Kyoto food, but this really did it, and even more so considering the price. Savory, salty minerals, butter and citrus, the requisite oak, some honey from maturity - it all just works. — 4 years ago

Au Vignerais Pouilly-Fuissé 1er Cru Chardonnay 2020

2024/9/4-5. Perhaps the most complete of the Merlin Pouilly 1ers I’ve had so far (though I still haven’t opened the Clos de France and was only able to get 2021, not 2020). There’s an overall balance and subtlety to the wine, but the elements are all there - fruit, mineral, acid, just a hint of judicious oak — 2 years ago

Les Longeays Pouilly-Vinzelles Chardonnay 2017

2024/7/7-10. Glossy yellow gold. Lemon rind, apple tart, toast, stone and custard. Mouth filling but not tiring, good acidity. Good Pouilly, enjoyable now but with the ability to evolve a bit more — 2 years ago

Côte-Rôtie Syrah 2019

Lyle Fass
9.3

Not as good as the 2018 which is weird as 19 is usually better than 18 in Cote Rotie. Let’s see what air does. Noseis funky, floral, spicey and a bit horsey. Hopefully it blows off. Very nice framing minerality but the horse is here and will gallop off into the distance soon. Paste is ripe and juicy with terrific power, depth and concentration. Big, ripe and sweet tannins. Super pure and super young. Engaging freshness and energy but the tannins are a bit aggressive and less focused than I’d like. 9.3 for now. Let’s see. It is opening up to be very elegant but also there is a sur maturite factor that’s not that great and the fruits is losing focus. HMMMMMMM??? — 4 years ago

Vieilles Vignes Mâcon La Roche-Vineuse Chardonnay 2019

Delectable Wine
9.0

The 2019 Mâcon La Roche Vineuse Vieilles Vignes is completely barrel fermented; however, since ‘03 Merlin has utilised less new oak, currently using around 10-15%. The 2019 is well-defined on the nose with hints of white flowers and orange blossom. The palate is quite spicy and peppery, a powerful Mâcon with just a light touch of honey towards the finish. Very fine. (Neal Martin, Vinous, November 2021)
