ZD Wines

Carneros Pinot Noir 2014

ZD Winery began as a partnership of two aerospace engineers whose initials formed the name of the winery: Norman de Leuze and Gino Zepponi. Ruby with ripe berry fruit aromas and toasty spice. On the palate ripe cherry and blackberry flavors with sweet vanilla oak notes, good balance. Medium+ finish, smooth tannins ending with fruit and cacao tones. Drink now! — 5 years ago

Unfiltered Prince Edward County Pinot Noir

Light ruby in color. It’s from Canada. And it smells of dry grasses and wild flowers. Or maybe those are just the smells stuck in my nose. It’s family time here at the lake house in Canada, with all the tension and buried hurts family time can entail. Enter this Pinot noir. The scent of violet, the taste of rose petals, tart cherries, and red currants. It’s new and familiar at the same time. Brings me right back to myself. Families are families, for better or for worse. Then wine, old grapes made in a new way, complex and fleeting, helps give you the long view and takes you right back home. — 7 years ago

Not sure why I got an alert to this via email today (a month later) but recall this being *another* great Gunja wine party.

Young and bright high tone fruit. Acidity a bit over the top in first day. Second day the wine calmed down and showed some beautiful fruit, earth and blackened pepper notes. — 9 years ago

Unfiltered Cuvée Des Amis Chardonnay 2015

Stone fruits prancing upon my nose & mouth with a ripping line of “drink heaps more of me” acid underpinning a generously textured mid-palate. Lengthy finish. Yum! A dexterously crafted Chardonnay of minimalist intervention leanings. Super beautiful. — 6 years ago

ZD Wines

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Founded in 1969 by two rocket scientists, ZD takes its name not only from its founders, Norman de Leuze and Gino Zepponi, but also from the engineering term Zero Defects. Sleek in its design, but with serious thrust, comparisons could be made to Corison or Montelena Estate, as well as some Left Bank Châteaux. Tart cranberry, cherry, and plum abound with purity, followed by 70% cacao, fresh pine, and damp cedar. Some secondary coconut oil adds a slightly exotic feel to an otherwise old school, savory-styled Napa Cab. Excellent. 93+ — 8 years ago

@Ron R - I use the term Gopher somewhat accurately. @Isaac Pirolo can find deals that no one else can and that cannot be replicated.

@Ron R - I totally agree with you. There’s something about north of $75 that makes me want ultra outstanding. Entry level Myriad, RM, Quivet all live south of that point and are great!!
