This is the third vintage of Tormenta (which Delectable recognizes as “Anfora & Barrica”); a wine made from an old clone of Godello sourced from a tiny vineyard in north Bierzo. Veronica ages this wine in a combination of oak vessels and amphora.

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of several hours. The 2023 “Tormenta” pours a pale straw color with medium viscosity. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of green apple, Comice pear, white flowers, lemons, gravelly earth and minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose, the finish is long and saline. Reminds me a bit of Raúl but it certainly has its own personality too. Drink now through 2035. Bottle No. 2889/4245 — 19 days ago

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of 90 minutes. The 2022 pours, a bright magenta color with a transparent core; medium viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of fresh strawberry, watermelon, kiwi, gravelly earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with low tannins and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium. This is a deliciously quaffable Rosado and yet has enough complexity and “je ne sais quoi” to grab one’s attention. Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of an hour. The 2019 Mª Luisa Lázaro pours a striking, almost radioactive yellow with medium viscosity. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of Meyer lemon, lime, starfruit, Granny Smith apple, sea spray, and rocky minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with high acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long, creamy and incredibly saline…like…how did they do that?! Spellbinding stuff. Further proof (as if any more was necessary) that Raúl Pérez is a freaking magician. Until now, this wine has only been released three times: 2005, 2013 and 2019. Only 2500 bottles of this ambrosia were made. Drink now through 2039. — a year ago

On the nose, the wine is developing with ripe and tart black fruits: blackberries, black cherry, salmiakki, horse blanket, and mixed earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium. A crazy, ambitious wine that’s the result of assembling over 300 plots. Between Raúl Perez and Palacios, Mencia doesn’t get much better. Drink now through 2030. — a year ago

70% of the must is aged in old chestnut ‘bota’ from Oloroso. 34 arrobas (700 litres) and the other 30% in a Cognac barrel. Reductive aging where the barrels are religiously filled once a week. week. Bâtonnage is not applied and reductive aging of the lees is sought. The wine is only racked once and for bottling. Seeking therefore to keep carbon dioxide in solution and do not add sulphur during aging. — 3 years ago

A very serious 100% Mencía, Valdeobispo is sourced from a 1.6 hectare plot planted in 1910 in the eponymous lieu-dit in Villafranca del Bierzo. This was the first vintage of this single-vineyard bottled under Cantariña’s label. Prior to this, grapes were sold to their neighbor Raúl Pérez, who actually advised them to vinify this plot on its own. Fermented in oak foudre and aged in used barriques for 12 months. Unusually dark ruby color, quite concentrated, slightly rustic. Aromas of red fruit, hibiscus, floral and earthy notes. Round and powerful, smooth tannins — 5 years ago
