Who made this Louis Latour Clos Saint-Jacques 1983? I bought a case at auction about five years ago but this is the first bottle I’m opening. Totally closed for hours but when it opened up... wow! Louis Latour don’t have a parcel of the vineyard and the number of growers is limited. From what I know it’s the only vintage they have released, so clearly bought in from someone - but whom...? Once it opened up it turned into a true classic - elegant rather than chunky, with clear secondary fruit characteristics. Some pepper, but hardly any vegetal notes - just a hint of fresh soil. Fantastic acidity, with a hint of fine tannins - light and delicate. A great wine! — 5 years ago
Came across this ‘64 Pommard Les Epenots bottled for André Simon in my cellar the other day. It was looking rather forlorn, with a sunken cork, so I decided to open it. I was expecting it to be good, given the quality of the vineyard and vintage, but this delivered far beyond anything I had dared to imagine. One of the best bottles of Burgundy I have had this year. Full of red fruits, with a hint of sous-bois, great acidity, persistence, and balance. Very long. I wonder who made it - the cork is branded with the name of the vineyard but no indication of producer:-&

Wow. This was a truly profound wine. How such lightness and great depth can exist hand in hand is a real conundrum. A beautiful nose of honeyed spring flowers along the Loire - as long as sin and refreshing as a cold bath in a still river at dusk. If that sounds silly it’s probably due to the effects of this bottle... — 6 years ago
Mas Jullien ‘Les Depierre’ 1995 (Syrah, Grenache, Carignan, Cinsault). Utterly spellbinding. This puts any doubt about the potential quality for Languedoc wines to rest. An intoxicating yet delicate nose of redcurrant, blackberry, and graphite, with hints of smoke, paprika, and liquorice at the very end (not unlike a Barca Velha opened recently). Gorgeous palate; still tannic, with great acidity. Very long and with a clear sense that it has just come intimista own. A shame most of these bottles will have been opened a long time ago... — 5 years ago
Stunning bottle of 1988 Mas de Daumas Gassac blanc with dinner tonight. Bone dry with virile acidity and a divine nose of honeysuckle, acacia, apricot stones, and light, fresh strawberries!
Only their third vintage but this shows how the wines truly come into their on at 30;-) — 6 years ago

A lovely wine from a less than lauded vintage. Great nose of beetroot, cassis, and redcurrent, though there is just a touch too much VA, which is slightly annoying. Great on the palate though, with tannins á point and very good length. Not the best Jean Grivot but no slouch. — 5 years ago
