At this stage Ferrando Carema White Label ‘16 blows away Produttori Barbaresco ‘16. Produttori is very ripe, and the alcohol is less in balance. The ‘16 normale does not really exhibit the freshness and elegance I associate with classic Barbaresco. Yes, the concentration and depth is impressive, and maybe at 10-20+ years the wine will achieve harmony. For now it exhibits more climate change character than the high tone energy desired. This is a Grey Market bottle purchased recently. I wonder if less than pristine storage and/or transit was an influence. I will compare notes with bottles purchased on release and via authorized Importer somewhere down the road.

A classic. Still somewhat tight but the dark berry fruit is there along with floral, pepper, earth tones and some licorice/anise

The 2016 may need more time in bottle, this is a structured and taught wine, but still very good with some air. To my taste, recent vintages of the regular Produttori releases have leaned more towards a riper, darker cherry note… less like my favorite lighter Barbaresco wines from years before. Perhaps just a warming trend I’ll need to get used to.

Best young Produttori I’ve had since the ‘10 on release. Absolutely smashing. Perfume, racy, lovely depth and length.

Clear Ruby. Dusty, licorice, ripe sweet red cherry, lipstick nose. A classically structured blast of red fruit acid and tannic grip. So much electric fruit that this a pleasure to drink right now. Though I think this will hit prime in 15 years. 9.5 now. Will only get better.

Not my favorite vintage. Had a lot more power than the two previous vintages that were more easy drinking. This one will go on for a long time. SM
