Painted Fields Curse of Knowledge Cabernet Sauvignon Blend

Bought this at the winery 2 years ago in Amador County, where it had been a surprise for us. We’d gone out there excited to try Zin and Rhone varietals, and so were surprised that we liked this Cab blend so much. Intense and open and with a bit of complexity and elegance. So good.

PS- If you’re on CellarTracker, please leave your handle in a comment so I can follow you there, as I’ve started an account because of this app’s constant issues.

Fields Family Wines

Stampede Vineyard Clements Hills-Lodi Zinfandel

Fields Family Wines ’14 Stampede Vineyard Zinfandel (SRP $28): Ain't no fun if the homie—The Spaceman—can’t have none (lol). This delicious Zinfandel is produced from 75-85 year old vines and made in small lots (only 100 cases made) with minimal intervention in the vineyard and cellar. A bright ruby color, this medium-bodied wine is juicy with beautiful raciness—showing a good sense of balance between richness, freshness and finesse. It offers appealing aromas and flavors of cherry and tart plum (gorgeous fruit), with notes of dill, spice, perfume, and loam adding complexity. This wine paired exceptionally well with the cherry/pecan baby-backs I smoked over the weekend. If you enjoy vibrant, food-friendly Zins that flirt with elegance, then this is your ticket. Put this producer on your wine radar if they’re not on it already. You can visit fieldsfamilywines.com to learn more. Blauww! Complex beyond words. Brie, baked apples, caramel, some butterscotch (insisted by Mrs Fields), hazelnuts, buttered brioche toast. Softer finish but this is insanity with Nobu sushi Omokase. — 9 years ago

Berckem Alsace Grand Cru White Blend 2019

Another Grand Cru from my favorite Alsacian producer.
Poura yellow, I get canary melon, botrytis honey comb, passion fruit, lychee.
Just slightly off dry, the acids have a mustard like quality. (the area is surrounded by mustard fields and I swear that I can smell and/or taste mustard greens/flowers in many wines of Berckem). Follows up with roasted apple flavors, and an incredible clean but long finish.
I wish I could open a bottle of this every night.

Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe

Télégramme Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2013

This is a great wine that does not overwhelm the nose. Hints of currant, tobacco, and a savory musky fragrance that reminds you of a fall French morning at the border of the vineyard fields. Voluptuous and silky. Long beautiful legs on the glass. Elegant. Enough said. — 9 years ago

Ampodium Côte-Rôtie Syrah 2010

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of two days. Equally enjoyable on both nights however, the nose was most powerful on Day 1. “Ampodium” (formerly Classique) is 100% Syrah sourced from a dozen or so vineyards and made in a largely traditional style; plenty of whole cluster and a very judicious use of new French oak. The 2010 “Ampodium”pours a deep garnet color with a near opaque core; medium viscosity with moderate staining of the tears and signs of light sediment. On the nose, the wine is vinous with notes of ripe, some desiccated and some tart, black and blue fruits: blackberries, blueberry pie, fields of lavender, black pepper, bacon fat, iodine, and granite earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin (mostly integrated) and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and laden with rocky minerals. Totally in balance and at peak. Lovely. Drink now through 2035. — 2 years ago

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 2010

Pontet Canet tasting and dinner with Alfred Tesseron.

What a great vintage. Its tannin structure will outlive the 09 and anyone 45 and older. The 2010 is a forever vintage and while different than 09, it will undoubtedly be just as great. It’s just going to take a lot more bottle age than the 09.

The body is full and round. The tannins have rounded but are still big and chewy. It’s more concentrated than 09. The fruit is really beautiful and again perfectly ripe. Dark currants, blackberries, dark cherries, black raspberries, dark plum, poached strawberries with hints of raspberries. Soft soil structure; dry top soil, moist clay, medium intensity dark spice, fresh tobacco, dry herbs, crushed rock powder, with dark, withering florals with violets. The texture is velvety. The structure and tension are big. The length and balance are worthy of its perfect score. For me, it’s just not there, yet! The acidity is really good. The long, lush, ripe, well balanced, polished finish is deliciously persistent.
