Old style barbaresco. The tannins have mellowed out but they are still there. Tertiary aromas that are hard to describe, faint rose petal perfume, old leather, maybe a bit of cinnamon. The color is brownish red. It is medium body with drying sensation at the end. The finish is long and persistent. I bought this one a long time ago and probably paid $20 or less . I am pleasantly surprised how good it is for its age and the producer’s obscurity. — 6 years ago
Truly delicious full bodied red with a beautiful mix of spicy and fruity notes. A repeat buy almost immediately. Drank with a homemade meal of turkey meatballs. — 7 years ago
So good, had it in San Donato, Chianti. — 8 years ago
Delightful, easy drinking primitivo. Really exciting on the nose: blackberry, tobacco and dark chocolate. Cinnamon white pepper, and Hungarian paprika are added on the palate (midpalate to finish), and the dark chocolate notes appear more as dark roast coffee on the palate. Score is lower than I would give it otherwise because it is a bit flabby for my taste. This makes it a good easy drinker though because it is very smooth. Acid is on the low side for the varietal and you really only get the tannins on the finish. Definitely one to buy again though. Good value at $20 and quite approachable for dinner party guests. — 9 years ago

Another vintage, another lovely Chianti Classico Riserva from Castello di Monsanto which continues to be a benchmark for wines from San Donato in Poggio. Popped and poured; enjoyed over two days and consistent over both. The 2019 Monsanto CCR pours a deep ruby color with a translucent core. Medium+ viscosity with no staining of the tears and no signs of sediment. On the nose, baked mixed berries, dried green herbs, red carnations, dried gravely earth. On the palate, the wine is dry. Medium+ tannin and Medium+ acid. Confirming the notes on the nose. The finish is medium+. A lovely pairing with almost any red sauce dish. Drinking well now and I expect it will continue to do so through 2034. — 3 years ago
Tasting 1-20. Another good ca wine! — 6 years ago
Always like tasting Syrah’s and this from Italy is no exception. This is pretty aromatic with obvious pepper tones and an vegetational characteristics. Not like floral to me but more like the smell of brush in the summertime. Odd and most likely incorrect but something I remembered from being a kid. I think it drank well. A little warm on the mouth. The berries come through and there was a touch of green pepper. Side note I had this with bulgogi and that flavor could have been an off shoot of the meal. It really went well with the meal. Overall, this is a fun bottle of wine to drink. Good price point and good with the right foods. — 8 years ago
Absolutely fantastic on point classic Chianti, still primary. Heady sour cherry fruit, a floral note, with undertones of mushroom, leather, sandalwood, black tea. Energetic bright acidity. Awesome, and likely better in 5 yrs — 9 years ago
Tasty! Very nice suprise, gets better with a while.to breathe. 2021 — 3 years ago
Fabulously seductive: Nebbiolo and Pinot Noir have an Italian princess! — 4 years ago
interesting little wine for unpacking from the beach, and another ignored on the shelf for a (too?) long time....but we are grooving to the liquid gold hue, the dried apricot, the apricot pit, and the wet rock notes coming in mini waves...not bad with the chaos of open chips bags. — 6 years ago
— 7 years ago
Incredibly smooth and very silky and soft. Nice dark purple color. Low in acidity. Low to medium tannin. A little grip comes a little later in the long finish. On the tongue there is a pleasant amount of ripened plums. It is Syrup-like once it enters. Flavors of juicy prunes are strong with a hint of cigar and tobacco and some fig. Really enjoyed this wine. Went well with famous home made meatballs and spaghetti squash. — 8 years ago
Light body, summer ripe red berries and good acidity. — 9 years ago
The texture is awesome, offering depth and intensity with creamy orchard fruit and pronounced volcanic soil presence. Built around a core of minerality, rather than racy acididy, it provides an alternative drinking experience. Will probably age well too. 2014 vintage. Donato Lanati is the consulting winemaker, so expect even greater things in the future! — 10 years ago
