Benjamin Brunel

Féraud-Brunel

Côtes du Rhône Villages Red Rhône Blend 2007

Opened the day before with half the bottle remaining. The 2007 CdR Villages pours a deep purple color with an opaque core; medium viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is vinous with notes of ripe and desiccated dark brambles, red and purple flowers, open pasture land, olives, some black pepper, leather and organic earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannin and medium acid. Confirming the notes from the nose, the finish is medium+. This is an impressive wine despite the rather modest designation, especially when you consider it’s nearly 18 years old! Then again, the talent behind this wine should yield a solid wine (Pegau & Cailloux). Drink now though it could easily see its 25th birthday if you must hold one longer. — a month ago

Les Cailloux (Lucien et André Brunel)

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2019

I’ve been so eager to open the 2019 Les Cailloux, the first of a case that I bought a couple of years ago following a visit to C9DP during which I first tried the wine. This is an exemplary wine for the region, predominantly old-vine Grenache with around 30% (I think) other varieties, which is both powerful and pure, striking a lovely balance between a modern, terroir-driven style and the natural rusticity of the appellation. I enjoyed this so much I made no notes, so can’t say much more other than that I’m delighted to have a case of this and would recommend it to anyone interested in fresh, pure and ageworthy examples of Châteauneuf. — a month ago

Macán Rioja Tempranillo 2015

Deeper ruby , slightly narrower garnet , ruby rim . Quite richly fruited with a meaty , smoky character also , red plum , dark cherry , blackberry , touch of spice . On the palate this has quite good density and grippy tannin , balanced acidity , darker ripe fruits. Reasonable length . Quite polished and modern in style . Needs time , come back in 5 years and will last well at least a further 10 . — 24 days ago

Stunning, really. Still fresh and fruity, but with impeccable balance. Wish I had more! — 3 months ago

Châteauneuf-du-Pape White Rhône Blend 2023

Wowza this is good. 80% Roussanne, and it shows. I love that grape. Such richness, and though the acidity is low, there’s great mineral tension here. So rich and enveloping. — 4 months ago
