Big props to Girl and the Fig for excellent service including decanting this wine prior to our arrival.
A very extracted deep purple with no signs of Browning.
Relatively tame aromas of deep berry, baking spice, faint black pepper, juniper berry, menthol, red flower. Heady but not overtly alcoholic.
The palate is a different story. Explosive, much more tart, and red fruits. Pomegranate, cranberry, red cherries overlie the gamey, meaty, olive tapenade of Syrah. Dense, chewy, but not heavy or particularly hot. For 15.7% light on its feet. The tannins are never intrusive but provide needed structure along with surprising bright acidity. Finish just goes on and on.
An unforgettable wine that I am glad we got to experience. Not exactly my personal style but really complete and enjoyable. This wine also feels like it’s just hitting its stride. — 3 years ago
Solid Syrah. Nice nose and dark fruit. Happy retirement to Bob — 9 months ago
This cab was awesome. Great notes of berries and really smooth, no strong overtones and sips well. With Napa crew — 6 months ago
2003 vintage. "Spongy" cork so used the Durand. Decanted and tasted after 30 minutes, 1.5 hrs, 2.5 hrs and 4.5 hrs. Some sed but not too much. Heavy body. Massive structure and fruit to carry the 15.8% ABV along. Ridiculously concentrated. Will likely take this effort another 12-15 more years to noticeably "thin out" even slightly. It's that bigg. Don't feel that it is still climbing the charts but, with tonight's effort, proving it can stay top of the pops indefinitely. With all that said, the passage of time finds this 2003 in better balance than some 2010+ SQN red efforts. 2.15.24. — 9 months ago
