Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 2014

2014 vintage. Last tasted 04.20.22 (9.5). Still tight but behind all the subterfuge, clouds, white lies, deception and smoke, there is a fantastic show slowly being assembled. All the performers are there and you've watched plenty of the rehearsals. Another 8-10 years will likely find this in the 9.6 and maybe 9.7 zone when the curtain finally rises. Built for future speed. If you've got the time and ca$hi$h, put a case aside and start tapping in 2035. This goes places wine doesn't have a right to. It's not asking for permission. 01.30.25. — 3 days ago

Nice nose. Crunchy. Bright red fruit. Spice pepper on finish. Better than prior bottles. Slight funk. — 5 months ago

Cayuse Vineyards

Bionic Frog Walla Walla Valley Syrah

A garnet-purple color and expressive nose with that initial Cayuse funk and notes of red berries. smoked meat, herbs, bark and dusty like minerals. Taste: beautiful silky and soft feel. Red berry fruit stands out with gamey meat, iron & bitter chocolate notes and a metallic medium, plus finish. Was looking forward to opening this 2016 again and it did not disappoint! — 9 months ago

Château Léoville Poyferré

Saint Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2005

Opened and poured into a decanter about an hour prior to service. The 2005 pours a deep ruby/purple color with a near opaque core; medium viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of ripe and tart black and red fruits: black and red brambles, cassis, tobacco, green pepper, graphite, espresso, earth and soft baking spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and the texture is silky. For what it’s worth, there were a number of nice wines at the table and I kept coming back to this which, now that I think about it, also Léoville-Poyferré seems to always deliver more than expected. The 2005 is in the zone and I don’t expect it fall off anytime soon. Drink through 2045. — 25 days ago

No Girls Wines

La Paciencia Vineyard Syrah 2011

9.3

My choice for a Rhône style theme with my local group.

Definitely the oldest No Girls I’ve opened. As expected, these have a Burgundian flair to them in the way they are made when compared to Cayuse/HP/HC. Not as much depth/richness, but there is great acidity and the use of stems is clear. Faint ruby in the glass. Stemmy/green aromatics with herbs de Provence, black olive, Cayuse funk/iron on the nose. Saline, red and black berry driven on the palate with black pepper spice, truffle, beef jerky and big phenolics. Tart and acidic, I followed this over two days, and to my surprise, held up very well. Pop now.

Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe

La Crau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2012

Drank through a vertical of this, 2012-2015, quite different oldest to youngest. The ‘12 smelled like a dusty old closet, some funk, surprisingly lean wine, good after some air. ‘14 was the best mix of fruit and garrigue. Fun experience. — 2 months ago

Château de Beaucastel

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhône Blend

2007: Wow. Phenomenal Chateauneuf with tons of character. Viscous, very rich, nicely concentrated with plenty of minerals and funk to balance the still-persistent purple fruit. Can’t imagine this getting any better with more age but plenty left. — 7 months ago

Cayuse Vineyards

God Only Knows Armada Vineyard Grenache 2016

Color - a luscious crimson red. What a nose! Cayuse funk & raspberry-plum fruit, jumping from the glass with smokey meat, black pepper and a touch of cigar box lingering. Taste - a smooth textured, creamy wine coating the palate with notes of strawberry fruit, herbs, orange peel, and green bell pepper with a long smoked bacon, raspberry finish. — 2 years ago
