Coronica

Gran Malvazija Malvazia 2016

My bottle is labeled "Gran Malvasia 2016". On the nose, this is apple orchard or maybe a peach orchard where the fruit isn't ripe yet... On the palate, for me, this is a russetted golden apple... One of those rare cider varieties deep in the orchard... Apple schnapps, dry peach, sage, mineral... Dry in the mouth... Medium acidity... The finish is long and becomes buttery as time passes... This really is outstanding seven years after the vintage. — 3 years ago

Gosset

Grande Réserve Brut Champagne Blend

Nice with our cheeses. One, (Four Fowl) sent from our friend @Severn Goodwin. Really excellent.

Happy Holidays! 🎄🎁🎅⛄️❄️🌟

The Gosset was opened by our friend Christina. This has seen air through oak & leans into an oxidative style which, is good but, not my favorite.

Lots of bruised, golden & apple, bruised pear, touch of spoke cider, pineapple, ginger ale, strong, grey bulky minerals, bread dough, yeast, saline, sea fossils, chalky stones, some flint, limestone, white flowers, some yellow lilies & jasmine/spring flowers. The acidity is racy with a well balanced, smartly polished finish that is nicely persist.

Yum yum, St. Stephen from Four Fat Fowl. I thought we had a 1/2 wheel in the refrigerator still from a recent purchase, wanted to have some after work today, but alas we had finished it. Off to get some tomorrow. Glad you enjoyed.

Clos Mogador

Nelin Priorat White Blend 2017

Somm David T
9.3

Perhaps, our favorite non Burgundy white. It is unique among whites.

Also, one of the best afternoons we’ve enjoyed. Appointments at Clos Mogador & Erasmus. Then, lunch looking back at both properties from Amcis. A great meal we would give two Michelin stars. This wine and a custom four course for two for only 70 Euros in 2015. Fantastic restaurant. A must do in Priorat.

The nose reveals; ripe & slightly sour pineapple, lemon chiffon, mix of well extracted stone fruits, notes of lime candy, banana peel, slight burnt brown sugar, blend of chalky minerals, volcanics, chamomile, vanilla bean notes, well cooked toast, sandy dry top soil, fennel (grows everywhere), tree bark with sap, mix of dark & white spice w/ white dominate and a fields of spring flowers.

The body is full & round with good viscosity. slightly sour pineapple, lemon chiffon, mix of well extracted stone fruits, golden apple to cider, tropical melons, kiwi, notes of lime candy, banana peel, fringes of marmalade, slight sugar in the raw, blend of white, chalky minerals, mint, volcanics, crushed dry sandstone, saline, chamomile, vanilla bean notes, well cooked toast, dry herbs, sandy dry top soil, fennel (grows everywhere), tree bark with sap, mix of dark & white spice w/ white dominate and a fields of perfume spring flowers with mixed greens. The acidity is round and rushes like a river. The long, rich, well knitted & balanced, polished & elegant finish goes on & on ending persistently w/ sweet white spice.

The 2017 is different than the earlier vintages we’ve had. It needs another two years in bottle. If you drink now, fully chill and decant 2 hours.

@Sofia Jalilie @ES Faiello Highly recommend the movie “Dreaming of Wine” which tells the story of the revitalising of Priorat by Rene Barbier, Alvaro Palacios, Daphne Glorian and others. A wonderful short Doco. Prompted me to have a Clos Mogador for Sunday lunch. Would love to have a L’Ermite one day but is incredibly expensive.

Alpenfire

Dungeness Burnt Branch Reserve Still Hard Cider 2017

Over 200 varieties in blend, says the label., 6.8% abv, unfiltered. Website says Dungeness is a single orchard blend. A still cider, little head or bubbles on pour. Light golden brown in color, very good clarity. Baked apple aromas, reminded me of an apple pie or cobbler with cinnamon, but that's my brain searching for cinnamon where there is none. Buttery mouthfeel, malic and citric acidity. Dry and really nuanced flavor profile. Tart malic finish and aftertaste with mild bitterness. No apparent seed tannins or astringency. This is what really fine apple wine tastes like, uncarbonated. A surprisingly unique and pleasurable experience, worth trying once, even if it's not a style for you. Kudos, Alpenfire! — 8 years ago

For $35 at the Benchmark Bin Sale I’m happy.

Reductive in style with shades of oxidative. Golden apple, bruised pear, apple cider notes, lemon & lime citrus, green melon, some pineapple juice, ginger, crumbled chalkiness, limestone, saline, sea fossils, baguette crust, yellow lilies, white flowers w/mixed greens. Good acidity with a nicely balanced finish.

Visited the property in October 2022 and it is impressive. The walk through the Clos de Goisses vineyard was spectacular. Ate two bunches of the unpicked Pinot Noir, which only furthered the reason I can no longer eat table grapes. As well, the view of the Cote de Blancs from there is stunning!

Haven’t been able to get this since winter. So good for the price point, $40 ish. Good to be able to get this locally again.

Ripe, juicy pear, green & golden apples, pineapple, white stone fruits, touch of cider, sea fossils, limestone, grey volcanics, yeasty bread, baguette crust, caramel, yellow lilies, spring flowers, acidity is perfect with length, balance & smartly polished for days.

Great on both ends, cheese & shortbread cookies.

Figgins

Walla Walla Valley Riesling 2017

The 2017 Figgins Family Wines Riesling is a fantastic bottling from winemaker Chris Figgins. and is truly one of the best of its kind in the state. Showing off a golden hue, this begins with lovely petrol aromatics along with white flowers, honeydew melon and candied pineapple coming through in the glass. On the palate this delivers vibrant minerality backed by flavors of white peach, lemongrass, roasted pineapple and hints of smoky undertones which complete this complex and delicious Riesling. Liberty Ciderworks

Cider

Liberty Ciderworks, Spokane WA. 55 Chain English Style Cider. Label claims it to be “dry, tannic and fruit-forward” with Dabinett, Chisel Jersey, and Brown’s cider-specific varietals. Golden brown, excellent clarity, light carbonation, not much head on initial pour. Some oak barreling. Lightly malic with restrained aromatics. Tannic level highly complementary with a light touch on the wood extraction, thankfully. Exceedingly well crafted, great stuff. — 3 years ago

Millésimé Brut Champagne Blend

95 vintage. Popped more than expected. Still has bub bub bubbles. With caviar scallops over latkes. Don’t drink a lot of heideieck but glad to find this bottle. Dark golden color. Nose has sea breeze, *cookie dough*, marzipan & fun dip. Palette: Carmel apple cider. peanut brittle. Whipped cream. Nice lemony acidity present. Finish isn’t exceptionally long, but certainly present (it’s sticky) with some lemon pith, and is, of course, pleasant. — 5 years ago

Tastes really good tonight. Showing more of the right kind of oxidative notes I enjoy.

Golden & green apple, braised pear, overripe pineapple, lemon, lime juice, nougat, some apple cider, vanillin, yeast, bread dough & crust, sea fossils, grey volcanics, limestone, white spice, gentle, powdery chalkiness, micro oxygenation, excellent with spring flowers, yellow flowers & withering white lilies. Excellent acidity. The finish is rush, smartly balanced, elegant and persistent.
