Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2020

I’m surprised by how well this 2020 bottling showed.

Captivating aromas of sour cherry, plum, cedar, dried herbs and mushroom, and a touch of tobacco. The palate is quite concentrated and powerful yet composed and elegant. Fresh acidity and firm yet fine grained tannins. Should age beautifully.

Grands Échézeaux Pinot Noir 1990

Right after opening: black fruit, powdery perfume, and rose petals wrapped around me in three-dimensional layers. 1990 really is a great vintage—every great vineyard site and every famous estate lives up to expectations.

One hour later: sandalwood, cream, aged Pu’er tea, and temple incense—the tertiary aromas had fully opened, and I felt as if I’d been carried back in a dream to the White Horse Temple.

On the acidity: vivid yet understated, with a firm yet balanced structure. Drinking such good wine lifts my mood too.

Touch of over the hill but still OK. Lost color. More for the geeks and aficionados - than the casual wine drinker. So this review is for you guys. — 3 months ago

How long do you think the 2007 can run for? I’ve been aiming to open a magnum in 2030. Perhaps I am being too hasty!

El Enemigo

Gran Enemigo Gualtallary Cabernet Franc 2021

9.3

The Don Rolando bottling was a tough act to follow, but this Cab Franc is equally impressive.

Perfumed nose of black cherry and plum layered with violet, pencil shavings, tobacco leaf, a subtle green herbal note that added freshness without becoming vegetal. The palate, almost Bordeaux like, is concentrated and layered, driven by vibrant acidity and stony minerality, with fine grained yet firm tannins.

Nice rioja. Warmer than I like but it’s hot this summer. Smooth. Floral notes. Easy to drink. Low tannins. Great taste. Highly recommend. Didn’t even loose my taste for drinking after looking at my wife’s cut open finger from the knives i just sharpened. Dry, doesn’t make your mouth pucker. Gets better the more you drink. 9.2. 33$ great value.

Échézeaux Pinot Noir

15 is a vintage I like — a hot year. This time I also drank it in two sessions: half the bottle from a decanter at the restaurant, and the remaining half the next morning.

Right after opening: the floral notes were so beautiful. Violets lingered around the rim of the glass like vines, and the tart plum and red fruit flavors were very sweet. Many people say sandalwood — I didn’t get it.

The next morning: fruit, game, wood smoke, and a savory, saline hint of seafood sauce. Grand Echézeaux still has more structure than Echézeaux. In the same vintage it has earthy and cedar notes; this one is a little lighter, not as muscular — which is the style I like. It has backbone, but the backbone isn’t that hard.

Palate: full-bodied, powerful, and concentrated. The tannins are firm but fine-grained. Even on the second day the acidity was excellent, and the finish was extremely long. Love it.

Cuvée Duvault-Blochet Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2020

What an incredible, deep wine. Decent smokey nose, the fruit not so aggressive, very elegant. On the palate very longlasting and full. Another dimension every 5min. Absolutely in love. One of the best Pinots I have ever had! — 15 days ago

@Peter van den Besselaar, the label says 1987, your note says 1986, and Delectable says it’s 2000 — hmmm, Who’s on First?

@Doug Powers Thx. The label! I don’t know why Delectable describes 2000, tried to change the identified wine but that does not work.
