La Mouline Côte-Rôtie Syrah 1976

I must have sniffed the glass 4-5x before I put the wine in my mouth. Funk , in the best sense of the word , leather , cured meat and old furniture . When I finally tasted , the complexity of flavors were head spinning. A melange of flowers , spices , game, red fruit and some dark fruit . Reminds me of some aged Burgundy and Barolo that I have consumed. What I imagine being on LSD would be like, hopefully there are flashbacks. An amazing trip ! — 4 years ago

@Doug Powers Was it a Wine Workshop event? I recall the internal struggle about spending the money on these events. In hindsight they were”cheap” given the ascent in pricing that has occurred in the US market.

@Ira Schwartz— I think those tastings were sponsored by a few guys, one guy was Bob Millman, whose name I see on emails from Grapes just north of the city? But cannot remember the name of their company from back then. Sorry.

Unfiltered Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel 2018

Poured into a decanter about two hours prior to dinner. There was some decent sediment so I left the last ounce or so in the bottle. In the glass, the 2018 pours a deep ruby with a translucent core; medium+ viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, this is absolutely gorgeous with heady notes of fresh ripe blackberries, black cherries, pomegranate molasses, tobacco, black pepper, some dry earth and beautiful integrated baking spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Beautifully balanced. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and has a satisfying melange of fruit and spice. This is fabulous with some air right now but I expect it will age beautifully through 2038. — 2 years ago
