This nose has an insane perfume. Spice, smoke, chalk, citrus, mango, tangerine, peach, confectionary and it’s got so much depth and purity. So focused and narrows it’s got lasers. Dense and chewy and unreal saltiness. Smokey as well and just so enveloping. What a finish. Almost tannic. Intensity. Acidity higher than schlossberg and probstey. Less ripe but more depth. So clean. Brut Champagne Blend

Piper-Heidsieck Cuvée Brut is excellent. Got it for $35 on sale. Well worth it at this this price point. According to some research, the blend is composed of a "majority of Pinots Noirs, incorporating more than 100 crus from around the Champagne region and Pinots Meuniers from the Grande et Petite Montagne de Reims region." Either way a golden fruit (pear and berries) and toasted almond greets you at first sip. Excellent texture and finish. Wonderful drinking champagne.
On the palate:
A structured, full-bodied and franc wine. A juicy, fleshy pear and golden grape texture. The finish narrows to citrus and grapefruit flavors. A wine with great fruit, a good mouthfeel and a harmonious balance.

Lemon custard narrows on the nose to Meyer lemon pith, lime zest, pomelo, gun flint glints with alumina, marmalade mix. Tart lemon palate puckers to a kiss of lemongrass awash in a lemon-lime sea of brine; spongey lemon pith finish.

Forêt Chablis 1er Cru Chardonnay 2005

Light gold. Bright in the glass. Initial nose like rich heavy CA Chardonnay which seems to be the vintage trait. But then with air it gains complexity and the nose narrows to river stone and honeysuckle. In the mouth its not Chablis like at first but then the acidity powers on with an hour of air. Great finish. Moving from primary to secondary notes at age 10. Good now. Can't wait to see where it goes in the future. — 10 years ago

Asatsuyu Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2013

A fascinating and little-known brand owned by Kenzo Tsujimoto, who purchased 3,800 acres along the slopes of Mt. George in the late 1980s. Kenzo Estate wines are the result of a collaboration between winemaker Heidi Barrett of Screaming Eagle and legendary viticulturalist David Abreu, the wines are almost exclusively exported to Japan, and they sport an impressive price tag. This half bottle of 2013 Asatsuyu Sauvignon Blanc sells for a mere $95.00, if you can find it. Nuanced aromas of guava, underripe pineapple and peach pit give way to an attack that is surprisingly round and full. For me, the most intriguing aspect of this wine is how much it narrows it's focus at the finish, one that is interlaced with classic Sauvignon Blanc herbaceousness and chalky minerality. — 10 years ago

Château Haut-Brion

Pessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend 1959

Tasted blind, from two combined bottles. Dark reddish amber rims with a more dark reddish tawny center. Obvious nose says we are in old world Bordeaux and brings smiles. Notes of black cherry, cigar box, dirt barn floor, gravel, tobacco leaf, old leather saddle. Long finish. The guesses focus on 40s/50s/60s Bordeaux. The experience is similar to a bottle of 59 Haut Brion I opened only a couple of weeks ago, so I am in Graves and the debate narrows to 59 vs 61. Would Stan open 2 bottles of 59 HB for the team? Yes he would! I go with the similarities I’m getting with my recent bottle of this and nail my guess. — 5 years ago
