Laurent-Perrier

Ultra Brut Nature Champagne Blend

Big fruit with lime leading and citrus nation dragged into the vortex. Kefir, lemongrass toasted brioche. Palate: Lemon juice and pith, ditto the lime, big splashes of starfruit, quince and grapefruit suppressed in chalky adhesion. Clean and focused, brilliantly backlit by cool herbs and ends with lime zest and juicy lime and just a few drops of saltwater.

Vecchie Terre di Montefili

Montefili Rosso Toscana Cabernet Franc Sangiovese 2012

2021/4/29-30 with Nanjing saltwater duck, etc. Normally I don’t go for wines with international varieties from places like Chianti (and Panzano no less), but I came across this without knowing what was in it and had been wanting to try something from Montefili. It was pretty good - and the Cabernet Franc (which might be my favorite of the French varieties in Tuscany due to Ampeleia) hit the spot when I wanted something to go with duck. It had the brambly cassis and green tobacco, with some cherry from the Sangiovese. Was best on day 1 - was a little plain on day 2. — 5 years ago

Château Fontareche

Vieilles Vignes Selection Corbières Carignan Blend 2018

Rich smells of milk chocolate, ripe blackberries brambles and fresh blueberries, with hints of white mushroom, tart cherry, and saltwater taffy. Medium-light weight, deep opaque red with rich oily umami mouthfeel and light red fruits like cherry and plum on the palate, and soft well polished black tea tannins lingering nicely on the finish. Very interesting red, like a poor-mans-Ho-Brion (😉), would probably go well with tomato-cream sauce dishes and grilled meats or great by itself. Great value — 6 years ago

Stone fruit, toast, and tangerine — a little saltwater. Nice texture. The brut (vs extra dry) works really well here. Super tasty. I think … 92! — 9 months ago

Rotari

Brut Trento Rosé Blend 2014

Pale salmon all seashell and saltwater on the nose. So we have both river and ocean in one glass, boom. Jumpy but fine bubbles and same as nose but add in lilacs and raspberries so we are moving from water to land. Then the bubbles burst upon the tongue and we have sky. Am I missing any element? Nah, this is fire.
Well-priced fire to boot. Trentodoc I see you.

Update: just realized I reviewed this before but that was in relation to pairing with pizza. Which is fabulous at. But love it solo too!

Erste + Neue Kellerei

Kalterersee Classico Superiore Südtirol Alto Adige Schiava 2020

Brick rim and super pale transparent salmon color. Some pink and purple floral aromatics on the nose, a little funk but not overpowering or off putting whatsoever.
Great acidity, balanced alcohol, very smooth and light tannin that linger to deliver a peppery finish. Overall complex and delicate on the palate with amarena cherry flavor and some artificial pink candy like hubba bubba or cotton candy saltwater taffy. Really desirable minerality similar to the whites I’ve tried from this region. i don’t think you need to chill this before drinking. Would definitely recommend and I’d buy it again for $20 in that 90-92 range for me.

Hermitage White Blend 2020

What a beaut. This took about an hour to open, but when it did it sung out. Yellow grape, cotton candy, green plum, kiwi, orange cream, saltwater taffy. A nice lick of butter cream. All this while remaining lean, tart and exceptionally balanced. Lovely wine. — 4 years ago
