Lando

Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

I was shocked to find this on the wine list at Larsens in Santa Clarita. I was first introduced to Lando wines at World of Pinot a few years ago and met Sam Lando there. Became a huge fan of his wines and was so pleased to enjoy it again. — 3 years ago

Minimalist wines Connect the Dots Syrah 2020

Nice Syrah. Acidity balances out the ripe fruit. Plum, boysenberry, dried herbs, graphite, violets. — 2 years ago

Becker Vineyards

Iconoclast Texas Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

Visiting Fredericksburg TX for a few days. This is TX hill country and has a big winery community. Never tried any TX wines before but found a few surprises here. We tasted at Becker earlier today but not this wine. $30 on the restaurant wine list. Becker wasn’t our favorite stop but it is the only local winery represented on their list. Overall local wines seemed overpriced compared to CA wines. Just realized we had an older vintage (2018) on our last trip from Houston to Anaheim. It’s interesting that most of the grapes used in the local wines come from Lubbock (panhandle) area. Don’t know where these grapes came from, or what varietals are present. — 3 years ago

Mount Mary

Quintet Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2006

A rich crimson red in colour. Cassis , bay leaf mulberry and notes of violets. On the palate black currant, restrained yet sweetish - see notes from a year ago in March 2020. Sam Middleton, part owner and winemaker likes to drink Quintets between 10 and 15 years of age although I have had much older examples from friend and longtime Mount Mary collector, Dr Peter Sklavos. One of Australia’s classiest Cabernets. Not as minty as Coonawarra or as herbal as Margaret River. Commemorates the passing of founder, Dr John Middleton in 2006 as on the label. — 4 years ago

Domaine de l'Espigouette (Bernard Latour)

Gigondas Red Rhone Blend 2017

When I lived in Houston in the aughts, I drank a few fragrant Cotes Du Rhônes from this estate, so I was eager to try their Giggie, even though I’ve grown tired of Southern Rhônes as the climate has warmed and Phillipe Cambie seemingly put a spell over the majority of producers. Well, this is a bit better than the typical blocky, heavy wines that seem increasingly prevalent there. It’s densely colored (of course), but the nose has a bit more elegance and nuance than the typical Gigondas estate these days, showing fresh dark berry fruit, really interesting almost chaparral-like garrigue/earth notes, warm stones, and meadowy wildflowers. In the mouth it’s dense, but a little lighter than the new norm thank goodness, with nice savory flavors and decent acids. Tannins are soft. It won’t make me forget Giggies from the early ‘80s, but it’s nice. — 4 years ago
