Shafer Vineyards

Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay 2022

Lemon gold color with aromas of stone and tropical fruits with citrus, sweet floral and complex spice, no MLF. On the palate flavors of ripe melon, pineapple, apricot and honeysuckle notes with lemon zest and biscuit notes, delicate, complex and well balanced, big and full Chardonnay. Long finish, savory, ending with mineral tones and fresh finish. Will age well. Outstanding! While I usually do not decant whites, this one will benefit to breathe a bit! — a month ago

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2004

August 28th is National Red Wine day...popped this to celebrate

1 hour decant (decent chunky/fine sediment). A striking inky dark purplish magenta color with some bricking. On the nose: Enticing perfumed notes of red fruit, forest floor, smoked meat, menthol, and mocha. Taste: A velvety, plush wine with dark cherry/plum, currants, dusty earth, white pepper, graphite, and a long lingering dark chocolate espresso finish. YUM! In a great place with time to go.

Dominus Estate

Dominus Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 1990

Not what I was hoping for,
Gave it some air but not too much so that we didn’t lose the sweet spot. Didn’t touch the Shafer until this was finished. Just a typical older Bordeaux blend from Napa but very ordinary considering the price point. Secondary market purchase so who knows prior storage.

Bummer. Picked up some 1991, 2006 and 2019 Dominus recently. As always, cautiously optimistic.

I still have 6 bottles of 18, still not fit for drinking. I figured out of most of Napa that Heitz, Dominus & BV GLT would be the ones to go with in 1990 vintage.
I’m 1 for 2 so far
