Zinfandel

Not zinfandel but their 2022 petite sirah. Black cherry pie bouquet. My first impression is buttery and velvety smooth. Very soft tannins. Blackberry and blueberry fruit and a dry Earth tone finish. Leaves your lips smacking for more!! — 7 months ago

Caymus Vineyards

40th Anniversary Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Ron R
9.1

We really wanted to love this, but alas, we think that around 2012 was when Caymus decided to focus on an à la carte presentation, which makes for quite a shallow encounter.
They have tapped into the logic of the Skinner box operant conditioning. We humanoids press a lever (in this case pull a cork), and a one-night-stand promptly arrives in our glass. Us peeps tend to follow the crowd (I present myself as exhibit A), but when you taste this, it makes a splash, but flatters to deceive.

I had 6 bottles of the 40th and not one over the years impressed me. I only buy older vintages of Caymus at this point.

El Dorado Syrah 2020

Skinner # 2 as compared to the Mourvedre. My wife likes it more. I like it less. It may need to be decanted. I’m not sure as it is a 2020. It is definitely not as complex and definitely more sour on the finish. My wife says it’s buttery and she loves it the most. It is a bit buttery, but I don’t have a really outstanding bouquet, initial pallet nor finish in my mind, but I will enjoy this bottle just not as good as the Mourvedre. — 8 months ago

Well, the petite sirrah is not much better. Easier to drink, but why?

Estate Grown El Dorado Grenache 2017

CA Grenache. Ruby red, pinot-like translucency, but plenty of heft. Red fruit, nuts, perfect with thanksgiving leftovers. I think I only paid $18. Would buy a case at that price. — 6 years ago

Bellerose Vineyard

Cuvée Bellerose Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 1983

JKT
8.9

Skinner auction demi 24 in owc. Maybe heading downhill?. Nose reticent then opened up in half hr with notes of that peppery cab Franc and earthiness. Palate shows some Bordeaux like wood and earth and tannin. Quite lean but we'll structured and not your New World fruity style. Medium finish. Still a value at less than nine bucks each. Upping score. Opening up after an hour or more. More classic Bordeaux nose. Apparently vineyard was run the old style way with horses! — 9 years ago

El Dorado Mourvedre 2015

This is the first mourvedre that I have absolutely loved. It is from Skinner Vineyards. : 2018 ElDorado Mourvedre. The nose opens this show with black licorice and lilac. Then comes the first taste - oh my goodness. Lots of dark fruit, boysenberry, blackberry, black cherry, and maybe even a little raspberry on the finish. Mid pallet brings in some nice velvet chocolate texture and flavors. Then there is the Oaky very dry pallet finish. I give this wine an amazing 9.6. I love this wine. I’m ordering more. I can’t wait to try their Syrah tomorrow as well as their petite sirah on Wednesday!!!!! — 8 months ago

Familiar California Mourvedre 2018

Bright, juicy, cloudy California Mourvèdre (100%) from the Dirty & Rowdy Family. Described as a “snapshot of California Mourvèdre”, the 2018 Familiar comes from vineyards in 5 different appellations: Antle Vineyard in Monterey county, Evangelho Vineyard in Contra Costa (120+ years old vines), Rosewood Vineyard in Mendocino (90+ years old vines), Shake Ridge Ranch in Amador county and Skinner Stoney Creek and Skinner White Oak Flats in El Dorado County. Strawberries, right amount of funk. Delicious — 6 years ago

Eighteen Sixty-One Red Blend 2012

A Southern Rhone blend most likely as Gigondas appellation. Dry and fruity like dark skin cherry. Nutmeg spice in the palate and a beautiful long finish and layers of strawberry and sweet tobacco. I paired it with fish soup — 10 years ago
