Chinese New Year 2019: The Year of the Pig

The 2019 Chinese New Year began Tuesday, February 5th and is the Year of the Pig. The pig is considered a lucky animal of the zodiac, and this year is predicted to be full of achievements. Those born in 1923, 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007 and 2019 are often reserved, great business partners and good friends. There's no denying that these years produced some noteworthy vintages, so let's celebrate the Year of the Pig by revisiting these unforgettable wines!

Château Canon

Saint-Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 1983

Tasted blind. Dark reddish tawny color. Refined nose with notes of black fruit, provencal herbs, earth and a little wood. In the mouth it's more linear than opulent. Several struggled with guessing the varietal and origin, especially me as I guessed old Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Even with more air it wasn't easy to identify this as Bordeaux, perhaps because of the vintage. Yet this was a decent wine and by no means a disappointment. — 5 years ago

Château Ducru-Beaucaillou

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 1995

Group tasted blind and guessed vintages between ‘10 and ‘14. Wonderful wine that is young but drinking so well right now. Wish I had another bottle! — 5 years ago

Louis M. Martini

Private Reserve California Cabernet Sauvignon 1947

Amazingly fresh in my opinion. As expected, a ripe wine from a ripe vintage but still subtle acidity and a pleasure to have the experience. — 6 years ago

Domaine de la Janasse

Vieilles Vignes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2007

Some may not like the use of new oak in this wine, but it was delicious! Layered and complex. — 5 years ago

Marcarini

Brunate Barolo Nebbiolo 1971

This is quite impenetrable. Dark fruit/ on the nose brooding, almost inky blue fruit. Underneath blackcurrant, slate, black pepper, tarriness. Then in the palate pure, pure dark fruit and lean minerality. An exceptionally well preserved bottle, but a long time ahead. Great balance. — 6 years ago

Cordero di Montezemolo

Monfalletto Barolo Nebbiolo 1971

From one of the region’s all-time greatest vintages, aromatic, musty and earthy on the nose with dried violets, the signature aroma of roses, damp forest floor, dried red cherries. The palate is amazingly fresh and vibrant despite its age with terrific depth and complexity. The finish is long and seductive. 💥 — 5 years ago

Tasting group last night. My 2nd, Group 5th. Quiet. Dried cherries, cinnamon, cassis. Unity. Lighter body than the rest of the flight. Tannic. — 6 years ago
