The Chimère from Manfred Krankl of Sine Qua Non fame, and the Maurel brothers of Clos Saint Jean, is, appropriately, a beast. Cherry, blackcurrant, Christmas spice, violets and chocolate. Many elements combine to make a compelling wine that deserves attention over time. Indeed, when this bottle was initially opened, the prevailing thought at the table was that it would last months. A small tipple to check in, some time later, was tasted with our own resident chimera (well at least she sort of has the head of Lion element down) present. — 5 years ago

Loads and loads of tannins, high acid. Lighter and brighter than I was expecting—more like what I think of in a Barbaresco?. My daughters cat really doesn’t care what we are drinking. I had an 03 a while back. Was outstanding. Had to try one on my 14s. Doesn’t disappoint and thankfully 5 more are waiting downstairs. 60% Cabernet Franc, 25% Merlot & 15% Cabernet Sauvignon

Nose has spring rose, rain moistened red raspberry, black currant and fresh sage.

Palate has lightly tannic blackberry, wet leather, ripe black currant, cigar box, wet clay and tarry black cherry.

Paired with a long cooked Bolognese sauce over fettuccine. Decanted ~3hr, more time in the decanter would benefit. Future bottles can be 2022+

Happy Father's Day 2019 to all. Today I'm posting pictures of our kids, yes they are all furry, independent and somewhat self-interested. Two boys (8) and two girls (2), sisters, all rescued. They generally bring the utmost of joy to my life on a daily basis. It has been a rainy and relaxing day here, everyone is loving the slow pace of life today.

Cat-Rotie. Gorgeous nose. Floral, feral, meaty, gamey, blackberry, lovely mineral and vivid. deep fruit. Palate is super juicy and elegant with lovely pure fruit and terrific freshness. Really fine tannins. 2013 is so good for Côte Rotie. Terrific mix of sweetness and gaminess. — 5 years ago

It would be unwise to underestimate the quality and complexity of Trimbach’s entry level wines, particularly the Riesling. Racy salt-preserved lemon, Granny Smith apple, orchard blossoms, ginger and shimmering minerality are what define this wine in addition to its petrol-forward personality. What it might lack in textural richness it more than compensates for with lovely freshness and kinetic energy on the palate. Outstanding vintage. (Kittens not included) — 6 years ago
