Duckhorn Vineyards

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

RICH. The word is RICH. Muscular Napa Valley Cab essence artfully weaving together fruit, oak, earth, tannin and acid, with an inviting nose, weighty mouthfeel and generous finish. Don’t often drink Napa Cabs these days because the QPR isn’t there, but this bottle doesn’t disappoint, despite the price. I’d buy it again. Enjoyed the 2018 vintage with NY steak and mashed potatoes. — 2 years ago

Gulfi

Cerasuolo di Vittoria Nero d'Avola-Frappato Blend 2020

2020 - This is really good, a funky cheesiness to it, that is a bit like the unami of percorino with a minerality that one finds more often in white wine. — 2 years ago

Casanova di Neri

Cerretalto Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2004

First and hopefully not my last opportunity. Huge amount of power that never backed down. — 2 years ago

La Rioja Alta

Reserva Viña Ardanza Rioja Tempranillo Garnacha 2015

Very exciting wine from Rioja Alta. Smooth and medium bodied blend of Tempranillo and garnacha. Excellent with ropa vieja and black beans and rice with yuca. Wow, out of this world. — 2 years ago

Viña Real (CVNE)

Pagos de Viña Real Rioja Tempranillo 2016

9.1

Dark ruby coloration. On the nose, black cherry, spice, currants, dark berries and forest floor. On the palate, currants, spice, black cherry, forest floor, chocolate and minerals in the finish. Pretty strong tannins. Shorter finish. — 2 years ago

Azienda Agricola Fontodi

Flaccianello della Pieve Colli Toscana Centrale Sangiovese 2010

Aromas of ripe fruit, clove, smoke, graphite. Some green, stems, and wood in the aroma too, which may be intensified by all the sediment in my glass. Soft tannins. — 2 years ago

Foxen

Block 43 Bien Nacido Vineyard Pinot Noir 2019

This 2019 was stunning at Foxen’s 7600 facilty a few weeks ago. Having it tonight with Montreal seasoned steak tips but almost can’t eat because each sip is so intriguing. Deeply macerated blueberries and blackberries, earth bracken notes. Fruit is surrounded by herbs and savory spices. Soft tannins but structured and firm. Premier cru level . Hard to imagine a better house than Foxen ( maybe Melville) for the greatest USA Pinots. True Burgundy rivals., while retaining new world fruit. Will probably become an evanescent spice box in 10 years. Gorgeous now. Will try to wait on a bottle to see how it evolves. — 2 years ago

Foxen roxen! Viognier, Syrah, Chenin Blanc (not joking) and all the Pinots.

Pommery

Cuvée Louise Brut Champagne Blend 2004

An exceedingly pretty old gold color in the glass with shy green tinges. A dearth of fine, pristine bubbles. The nose here is so alluring, so delectable. Lemon curd and honey brioche bread. Vanilla custard and orange shavings. There’s a nice element of smoke that begins to permeate after it warms up. Whiffs of red fruits appear after even more time. Really really nice.

Prestige cuvées are always so fun to open, and it’s not just about the champagne. It’s about the occasion, the drama, the mood, the romance, and everything else. 60/40 Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The Cuvée Louise is so indicative of the Pommery style. The dosage a bit higher than what many of us are now accustomed to but the wine still shows signs of tension because of the impeccable structure and balance.

This is a warm champagne, one that provides comfort. But it also manages to thrill. Full bodied and showing it’s maturity in a very good way. Caramel and soft butter in the mouth along with candied apples and butterscotch. Biscuits, toffee, and melon. The finish is long and rich. Delightful.

La Croix du Roy Sancerre Sauvignon Blanc 2019

Sometimes a restrained nose is the tighter, more impressive act. Less room for error. If this was a smidge oxidized, it wouldn't be what it is. Which is seriously wonderful Sauvignon Blanc. Voluptuous but very Sancerrian - precise.

Nothing to sniff out but the feintest apple, pear, jasmine blossom, and curls of smoke. Big mouth for big concentrated flavors. Clementine, green apple, and peach.
