I love Mas de Daumas Gassac’s whites and know a lot of people who do. I also like their reds but know many people (some of the same) who do not. They find the Cabernet Sauvignon grown in the Languedoc to be not quite right. On this bottle, I think I’ve identified something I like in the reds. The Cab Sauv has some of the same taste profile of better Chilean Cab Sauv that I grew up drinking as the son of Chileans (before they served the international / Parkerized palate). Anyway, a young bottle, but enjoyable with ribeye steaks, sautéed mushrooms and sautéed spinach. It represents a field blend of 12-20 different varietals, mostly historically French, but from all the major regions. 76% Cab Sauv,, 5% Tannat, 4% Merlot, 3% Pinot Noir, 3% Petit Verdot, 3% Syrah, 2% Cab Franc, plus ~4% other grapes from Italy, Georgia, Spain and France (the technical sheet identifies the Camenere as Chilean, but it is originally from France). — 2 days ago

Upon opening, VERY bitter and strong. Have to let this one open. Upon opening got pretty good. Similar flavour to the previous rioja I’ve had many times that I love, but this is just more of it and much stronger and more flavourful. Not sure that I want that out of a wine, pretty sure I’m not willing to pay more for it. Not sure if I should attribute that to the wine or its age (oldest bottle I have yet tried).

Lighter and easier drinking reds are my preference at the moment. Maybe I will feel differently and prefer the stronger flavours once I am more seasoned into wines as I’ve become with scotch.

Definitely will return to this bottle if that becomes the case, otherwise prefer other favorites or to try new wines at the price.

PnP. Dark red color with purple tones. Black and blue fruit on the nose with cedar and oak as well as subtle vanilla. Rustic and Bordeaux-like on the palate.
