Chaillot Cornas Syrah 2015

Shay A
9.4

Since I sadly can’t buy a bunch of TAllemand Chaillot (or even more unfortunately, Reynard), this producer’s expression is one I’ve been waiting to try. Only recently found out he is Noël Verset’s nephew (which certainly helped in getting those old vines from Chaillot!)

Double decanted for an hour before consuming the first half from the bottle the following few hours. Gorgeous translucent red-purple in the glass. Aromatics are bright and expressive…potpurri, black pepper, dark berry fruits, and whole cluster/stems. The palate is crunchy and energetic with peppered blackberries, herbaceous whole-cluster spice, and savory minerals. Lingering finish with big grip. It presents as a “big” cool climate Syrah (if that makes sense), not a burly rustic Cornas. Absolutely delicious.

Second half was consumed the following day and the finish was a bit more finesse driven with all the flavors in balance. Drink now with a couple hours of air or hold a few more years. Now to try the Sans Soufre…

Chiroubles Gamay

Nature Gamay of very good quality, in the spirit of Marcel Lapierre (his nephew has told me). At the same time greedy, accessible, and with a very beautiful aromatic density which unfolds especially when one gives the wine time to air out. Superb for its price.

Brut Champagne Blend

My nephew came ten days early!!! The WF down the street had this in the refrigerated case so it was an easy choice. His name is Armend and he and momma are doing awesome. The Champagne had brioche on the nose and loads of meringue on the palate. Quite attractive. Worth swooping for the price. — 5 years ago

The Butler Ranch Vineyard Red Blend 2020

Tastes like a Rhône blend - not typical of what I’m used to from California. Fresh, acidic, and peppery. — 8 months ago

Tyroldego 2015

A rarity , weekday lunch with wine. Visiting my nephew and his family for the weekend. A beautiful nose of earth, spice, and dark blue & red fruit . Duplicated in the mouth with excellent balance. A food wine. — 3 years ago

Such a peculiar wine, i remember letting this wine breath for ages before it'd give its best... same with his lagrein and I remember loving its super rare Blaterle(indigenous white variety). Great find.

Can taste citrus fruit like pineapple. Drank with a fruit bowl dessert and went perfectly. Also good for just drinking without food. Chill this and it’s better. — 5 years ago

Le Orme Barbera d'Asti 2017

Wow. A great barbera that my nephew brought over for dinner the other night. Opened it the day after and it’s tannins are smooth and blend perfectly with the cherry base I’m sure it’s not a value buy but this is a classic barbera. Buy it to show friends and family what barbera should taste like. — 4 years ago
