Greener Planet

Pulenta Estate

X Gran Malbec 2018

If a wine does not meet your (high) expectations, is it a disappointment?? 🤔. Yeah, everything is relative. This six year old Gran Malbec was still super tight. Sharp, spicy oak tannins (lots of new French oak?) kept anything possibly underneath totally hidden. Although some greener notes came through early on and again later after about 2-3 hours of opening. So, yeah. Not balanced, very intense, limited lingering and single note. Agung will help for sure but not confident if this wine will ever fully shine. But don’t be down on Pulenta. Fantastic winery. We will visit this fall (their Spring) as Spoken Wines. Talking about Spoken Wines, have you seen our latest video story of Hartenberg?? And their incredible commitment to regenerative viticulture, lead by… cows!! Beautifully explained and demonstrated right in front of you by Wilhelm Joubert, the viticulturist. Check it out. And don’t miss the surprise at the end 😁. www.spokenwines.com — 24 days ago

Muxagat Vinhos

Douro Tinta Barroca 2021

How fascinating! Extracted but the tannins are very very subtle, very perfumed - violets and roses, but not particularly intense. Soft, easy, a summer drink despite the colour. I suspect the greener and more rosehippy elements in the finish might put off some, but I like it a lot. — 2 years ago

Enderle & Moll

Muschelkalk Pinot Noir 2012

Pocked with a Coravin weeks ago. I thought the 12’ was risky. But when you ‘think you know Enderle & Moll you actually don’t’. Dark cherries, lots of lift and freshness, orange zest, touch resinous, crushed rocks, lime, hint kaffir lime, Japanese cypress. Needs more time but shows now much better. After being disturbed and retried. Definitely wait! 13%. So! So little color - elegant. E&M’s Pinot’s are the most unique and most challenging to taste on the planet. World Class. — 2 years ago

Domaine Roulot

Bourgogne Blanc Chardonnay 2017

One of the best Bourgogne Blancs on the planet that comes from a single vineyard plot from vines 30-40+ years. Rich with lemon lime, green apple, boat loads of mineral, good intensity, floral notes & racy acids — 2 years ago

Domaine de la Chevalerie

Galichets Bourgueil Cabernet Franc 2011

Cherry, menthol aromas. Medium bodied with medium acidity, more cherry fruit with earthy herbal flavors on the palate. Silky, smooth finish, hint of blackberry. Prior bottles of this vintage seemed to leaner/ greener, but not this one. Upright 5 days, decanted off sediment. — 3 years ago

Lieux Dits Les Carelles Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Champagne Chardonnay

Disg. 2/14…Always my favorite of the Lieux-Dits and without question one of the very best Blanc de Blancs Champagnes on the planet, it’s particularly special to have with some bottle age. It’s stunning today, rich and powerful with crazy depth to its layers with a deep, complex core of caramelized orchard fruit, roasted nuts, old rum barrels and candied white flowers, all seamlessly integrated. The palate is generous and detailed, with racy acids, waves of saline laced, chalky Le Mesnil minerals and a finish that stays with you. A BdB benchmark for my tastes. — 3 months ago

Château Léoville-Las Cases

Grand Vin de Leoville du Marquis de las Cases Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 1985

Quite deep ruby and , garnet terracotta rim. Quite spicy nose , slightly green touches , mix of red and dark fruit . On the palate fills out quite well , good acidity , slightly gritty tannins still with mineral , tobacco notes on the finish . Ok reasonable length . This comes across a bit greener than I remember it , so not sure how representative this bottle is , fine to drink now and over the next 10 years . 91

Second bottle medium deep ruby with garnet rim . Took a bit of time to open up , but very good definition , red and dark fruits, truffle , undergrowth, cigar box and grafite. On the palate quite charming sweet red fruits, red plum, cassis , dried spices, undergrowth , elegant for las cases , grafite and tobacco stained finish . Well balanced acidity and quite gritty but ripe tannin . This is lovely now with time in the decanter and over the next 10 -15 years . Completely different from first bottle .

Domaine Vrignaud

Les Vaupulans Fourchame Chablis 1er Cru Chardonnay 2017

Pretty classic for the most part. Nose has equal parts apple fruit (with a hint of underripe peach), chicken broth, wet limestoney sea shells, and a light toasty note. Good flavor intensity in the mouth, bone dry, vague whiff of oak, bright minerality driving the flavors. I would ideally like the acids to be higher, but we fucked up the planet so much that’s asking too much. Still very good! — 2 years ago
