Bien Nacido Hillside Estate Syrah 2016

2016 vintage. Last tasted 1.14.24 (9.4). Ripped through the last two bottles. Medium/medium-heavy body. Still plenty of meaty/gamey qualities afoot but undergoing potty training and getting domesticated. Just starting to get cultured and “pretty.” 4.12.24. — 7 months ago

Alban Vineyard Roussanne 1993

An experience wine to know, love and appreciate the history and genius of Bob Lindquist in birthing Santa Barbara/Central Coast as one of the great wine regions of the world. Here is proof. At 22 years young, a revelation in ageable Rousanne From Alban vineyard. Reduced with some matchstick, the fruit is mostly cider apples, but the long oak toast and yeasty, buttery golden color and honeyed deliciousness make this a wine to remember. Most will dismiss it as lightly oxidized, nutty or flat. But, there is charm and intrigue and the right pairing will entrance those who love wines from Jurancon and appreciate aged whites.
Glad I have more to share in the years to come.

Purisima Mountain Vineyard Syrah 2010

Wow. This was an absolutely stunning btl of Syrah. On the nose: violets, olive brine, bacon, soft vanilla cream, blackberry, dried blackberry, soft leather...amazing complexity. On the palate: fantastic acidity and density, pure syrah fruit, and very soft tannin on the finish. — 3 years ago

Alisos Vineyard Syrah 2011

As someone who hasn’t had a lot of California syrahs, this struck me as well balanced and built for long life. At 13% abv not at all opulent. That said, a lot bigger more aggressive dark and brooding than I would have expected, especially 8 years in. Black olive tapenade, dark chocolate, espresso, black tea, black plum, dark fruits, black pepper. Underlying hints of smoke and maybe even a floral note. Has an attractive spicyness and pepper flavor to it and finishes with both pepper spice and chewy tannins that still feel quite young. Acidity really nice, but still overwhelmed by that chewy tannin mouthfeel. Not sure if this has yet to uncoil or maybe never will. It’s delicious as is, it is there more? Hope to find out! — 6 years ago

Sawyer Lindquist Vineyard Grenache 2016

Drank with onion and pepper brats and peach, tomato, and corn salad at Grand Lake cousin’s camp (2021). Light mouthfeel, hint of pepper and spice, but the spice might be the peppers. Raspberry, strawberry, and mild blueberries. Lighter than my style but good with the brats and good fruit. — 3 years ago

Reserve Santa Barbara County Syrah 2013

Color still very youthful. Nose is somewhat sultry, even with significant air. Lots of smoky gravel, juniper berry, tart dark berry, sweat, dark liquid minerals, dried irises. Focused and more berry-centric in the mouth, concentrated, with a long fragrant finish. A small note of alcoholic pepperiness accompanies some some remains tannin. Lots of unique character. — 4 years ago
