Spottswoode

Family Estate Grown St. Helena Cabernet Sauvignon 2002

2002 vintage. Nice fill, good cork. Decanted with a respectable amount of powdery sed. Smelled great during decanting. Tasted 1.5 hours after opening/decanting. Expected light body with delicate tendrils. Medium body with a light palate footprint. Holy shazzbaat. This was absolutely firing. Like top of the pops, straight up to number one. Exceptional knitting and in a perfect spot now. Go all the way back to the inaugural 1982 vintage with this winery’s cabernet…thought my all-time fave was the 1991 altho the 1986 and 1987 were special. The 2020, picked early, thus avoiding the fires, is phenomenal as well. This was on another level and have had approx 150 bottles of Spottswoode Cab in the last three + decades. It was probably the best out of all of them. Difficult to imagine Napa Cab better than this. Power and finesse on display. Not improving but can hold this intensity for another 4-5 years. 12.24.24. — a month ago

Mary's Block Sauvignon Blanc 2016

Tonight's wine is the 2016 Spottswoode Mary's Block Sauvignon Blanc.

On the nose there are very distinct notes of grapefruit, peach, lime, melon, herbaceous notes and minerals.

On the palate there are lovely notes of grapefruit, tangerine, lime, white peach, grassy notes, herbaceousness and minerals.

This wine is medium bodied with a crisp and clean mouthfeel, medium + to high acidity that move very well into a long citrus and mineral finish. What a beautiful Sauvignon Blanc this is and it has at least another 5 years or more left in store. Please have a wonderful week ahead, stay safe and healthy and it will be the weekend again before you know it. Nostrovia! 🥂🥂🥂🥂

Spottswoode

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 1991

Medium ruby quite wide ruby garnet rim , quite pale in appearance overall . Quite spicy , slightly menthol on the nose , with spice , dusty notes , red currant , red plum , sous bois , violet and tobacco hints . On the palate there is more fruit with more red currant , red plum , some cherry and sweet blackberry . There is nice fresh acidity and rounded sweet tannin that is pretty much resolved . Quite sweet red fruited and elegant, though slightly short on the finish. This is still showing well though will not improve . Now over the next 5 years — a month ago

Napa County Sonoma County Sauvignon Blanc 2023

Concentrated stone fruit, grapefruit, guava, with tinges of passion fruit backed by grass and herb notes. Crisp, classic sauvignon blanc texture, though less racy than its European counterparts, but showcases the potential of aromatic New World whites. Very nicely balanced finish. — 6 months ago

One of my favorites from Premiere Napa Valley 2020. #pnv20 #pnv2020 #napa only 5 cases produced 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Spottswoode Estate Vineyard, first established in 1882
Aging for 20 months in custom Hungarian oak barrels
Inspired by winemaker Aron Weinkauf’s visit to the forests and Kádár cooperage of Hungary
Organically farmed since 1985

For the first time ever, Spottswoode offers a Cabernet Sauvignon from the Spottswoode Estate Vineyard aging exclusively in Hungarian oak. Since the first vintage of Spottswoode in 1982, the pursuit to capture the highest expression of this historic vineyard yielded a philosophy of experimentation and continuous improvement. In the cellar, winemaker and vineyard manager Aron Weinkauf conducts cooper trials, which inform how he selects new barrels and refines Spottswoode's diverse barrel program. In 2017, Aron Weinkauf visited the Kadar cooperage as well as forests in Hungary to gain a greater understanding of Hungarian oak. With the exceptional 2018 vintage, Aron aged 100 percent Cabernet Sauvignon from the Spottswoode Estate in custom barrels crafted during his visit. This wine is the result of his research.

Pretty nose of floral and berries jumped out while decanting. Didn’t touch for two hours. Elegant. Reminded me of a recent bottle of Spottswoode with tobacco and spice. Great experience. — a year ago
