The Present

Montevertine

Toscana Super Tuscan Blend 2020

Medium ruby , bright with a wide ruby rim . Restrained and focused at first , red cherry , pine , iris and wet slate , with fresh sage and rosemary . On the palate very elegant and again restrained , the spicy red cherry , raspberry , rosemary , sage and thyme notes , with good backbone from fresh acidity , saline hints . Tannins are quite elegant and though present are very fine . Medium , sour cherry stained length. Overall perhaps doesn’t have the complexity or structure of the 2019 but this is a very refined , elegant wine , as one would expect. This is actually enjoyable now due to the sweet fine tannins but will no doubt age well and improve over the next 10-15 years — 17 days ago

Viña Tondonia Reserva Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2011

Rich black fruits, oak and leather aromas; softened but present acid and tannins, the fruit is more tart on the palate, lighter in body while being rich flavored. — 8 months ago

Nice to open an Imperial with office colleagues. Elegant - with tannins present but refined. Still quite vibrant and juicy on the palate - it has peaked but not in decline. Really enjoyable. Nothing like opening a 6 L bottle!! — a year ago

Bodegas Juan Gil

18 meses Jumilla Monastrell Blend 2020

Began 1916, when Juan Gil Giménez, great-grandfather of the present generation, built a winery in heart of Jumilla. Blue label spent 18 months in new French and American oak barrels. Monastrell, Cab Sauv & Syrah blend (60/30/10), low yield, aromas of red berry and toasty oak. Palate shows flavors of dark berry fruits, espresso, cacao and hints of sweet spice. Round dusty tannins, well integrated with oak, medium+ finish ending with fruit and rich earthy oaky character. Nice! — a year ago

Château Palmer

Alter Ego Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 2009

Rick black fruit coupled with a nice tannic backbone that required some time in the glass to soften. Wood and smoke notes on the palette and ever present acid to support the wine’s body. — 5 months ago

Château Latour

Premier Grand Cru Classé Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 1985

Lots of eucalyptus at opening. 15 mins in it begins to settle in. Leather, mushroom on the nose with the ever present eucalyptus. Really well structure fruit on the palette, a tinge of acidity and a bit sharp on the finish. More time in the glass brings a balance that’s amazing for a 39 year old wine. Thankfully no one here to share!

Château Potensac

Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend 1989

You gotta love aged Bordeaux!
Black currant galore with some back currant leaf, a whiff of mint, barely a hint of cigar box. So fresh & enticing.
Poised, so balanced, very, very elegant on the palate.
Mellowed, yet present tannins, so finely polished. Juicy acidity, still some fruit on the mid palate. Nice length, great precision. What a lovely wine!
