Marqués de Riscal

Reserva Herederos del Marques de Riscal Rioja Tempranillo 2017

Probably one of the first Rioja reservas I tasted, some 30 yrs ago, so I’m rather sentimental about it- still very solid, & for about 16$ a deal. Black cherries, Dark cola & root beer notes. Medium bodied, mod acid. — 4 years ago

La Rioja Alta

Reserva Viña Ardanza Rioja Tempranillo Garnacha

My score is on a slight curve due to qpr. This 1970 inexpensive Rioja was SINGING! Completely mature but no signs of deterioration. Incredibly light and elegant, but at the same time so distinctly Rioja that it could be blinded on nose alone. It developed over 30 minutes. Dried fruits, sunscreen, dried herbs and dill, and wonderfully balanced. I prefer it over many lopez gran reservas — 8 years ago

Rioja Gran Reserva Tempranillo 2001

Elegant, well aged Rioja with cigar box bouquet and feel. Reminds me of Gran Reservas from back to 1955. Lighter body which I prefer now that I am older. — 9 years ago

Marqués de Cáceres

Gran Reserva Rioja Tempranillo 2011

The 2011 ‘Gran Reserva’ Rioja by Marques de Caceres is up there with the best Gran Reservas I have sampled from this storied winery. This beautiful wine was sourced from 35-50 year old vineyards with some sections in the Rioja Alta region being 65-85 years old. The grapes for this wine were cropped at a mere 2.4 tons/acre, as the wine is largely sourced from higher elevation sites that are set on limestone and clay. The wine was then aged for 24 months in French oak and then aged for four years in the bottle prior to bottling as the final blending is largely Tempranillo (85%) with smaller parts Graciano and Garnacha. Needing more than an hour in the decanter to fully unwind, the wine slowly unveils black tea and black cherry cordial aromas that mingle with shades of sagebrush and leather, with citrus rind undertones that are all marvelously brought together in the glass. The palate is deep and seductive, showing a wonderful texture and tension that runs through the wine. Exotic spices and chocolate shavings mingle with suggestions of hoisin sauce, peat moss, wild blackberry cobbler and cran-orange flavors. Complex and highly gratifying at the eight year mark, this exotic ‘Gran Reserva’ will cellar well for decades — but is very hard to resist in its youth. Drink 2019-2040- 94 — 7 years ago

So rich and so fine. I am usually a fan of more oxidative style bubbles so I am predisposed to enjoy Gran Reservas and yet this #Cava is so fresh and juicy. #codorniu — 8 years ago

One of the better reservas I’ve had recently. Big but not overdone, the ripe cherry, pepper, and vanilla notes are prominent but harmonious. Well-rounded. — 8 years ago

La Rioja Alta

Reserva Selección 874 Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2019

Brief notes, but this is a fantastic, traditional Rioja Reserva bottled exclusively for The Wine Society by La Rioja Alta, with whom they have a long-standing relationship. ‘874’ is a reference to the Society’s founding date, 1874, in a similar theme to the 904 and 890 Gran Reservas from La Rioja Alta. This wine is made in the same mould as others from this traditional bodega, sharing closest resemblance to the Ardanza Reserva though at around half the price – and it’s a big step up from the Alberdi Reserva. I bought twelve bottles of this at just under £10/btl, so it represents screaming value, and though it lacks a little of the complexity of wines such as Ardanza, it is a tremendous, classical Rioja that would put a smile on many a purist’s face. I’m smitten – and excited to see how it ages. — 2 years ago

Consistently excellent, dried cherries, rose petals, tobacco. Sustains nicely. The 2012 was made in a year without Reservas so it benefitted from all the best fruit. A cracker. — 8 years ago

C.V.N.E. (Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España)

Gran Reserva Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2009

Dark purple in color. Smooth, not too complex. Easy to drink. Fair amount of sediment. Especially for a bottle less than ten years old. Cune, was founded in 1879 and is one of Spain's oldest and finest bodegas. Gran Reservas are very uncommon and account for a small percentage of the wine produced in the Rioja region. — 9 years ago

Quinta do Crasto

'Crasto' Douro Red Blend 2013

Takes me back to my days living in Lisbon - 2004-2006. Nice field blended Douro tinto. Over the years, the style of the non-reserve wines has started to resemble the international style of their bigger brother reservas, which IMHO is unfortunate. I always liked the more rustic style of the non-reserve wines. Still a very good wine, perfect with a gamey steak, lamb or even pizza. — 10 years ago
