Thrilling. Loads of zip and vigor. A hint of struck matchstick and huge, powerful citrus and minerality. Powerful but still light and detailed with thrilling acidity and energy. Wow — 4 years ago

Morstein Großes Gewächs Riesling 2014

Gave this 45 min slow ox to really open. On the nose: peach, soft ginger, limestone, orange, just so intensely aromatic. On the palate: fantastic acidity, good salinity, mulberry leaf, limestone, peach...wow, love that density paired with the zip. Another absolutely stunning showing. — 5 years ago

Schloss Gobelsburg

Gobelsburger Cistercien Rosé Blend 2018

Pale pink in the glass this rosé looks to be a rather unassuming, but it is bursting with fresh strawberries and grapefruit on the nose. The pallet adds lively minerality, lemon zest, and a zip of effervescence. Wonderful value and paired perfectly with seared salmon with sweet chili glaze! ($12) [5/22/20] — 6 years ago

Great sipper for a hot day. Lightly colored, bright and refreshing. It has a little zip to it - think the carbonized vinho verde- hard to put down. — 7 years ago

Edelzwicker Alsace White Blend

Enjoyed the 2020 a bit more. Solid wine but sweeter (just a touch so) than expected. Needs a bit more zip. The 2020 being a bit better makes me wonder if I should have kept the 2022 a little longer before opening — a year ago

Domaine A. et P. de Villaine

La Digoine Côte Chalonnaise Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2018

Absolutely wonderful wine. Nice one to snag from a recent Manhattan Wine sale. Decanted 3+ hours, surprisingly accessible at this stage. Somewhat reticent on the nose, even after the decant. But so nice on the palate - perfect body, lots of red fruit, crunchy tart cherry, excellent acidity that hits very nicely in the mid to late palate that brings good zip. Tannins are there and ever so slightly chunky but doesn’t get in the way at all. Perfect with some simple roast chicken with mushrooms cooked in the chicken fat and jus. — 5 years ago

2018 vintage. Léoville-Poyferré-involved concern. 73% Malbec 18% Cabernet Sauvignon 5% Petit Verdot 3% Syrah 1% Cab Franc. 100% delicious. Medium/medium-heavy body. Crianza Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2017

Pop and pour through an aerator.

NOSE: cherry cordial, plum…fruit leathers from when I was a kid. Vanilla bean and chocolate. A little clove. Sandalwood. A dash of something tropical…like mango. Interesting.

TASTE: fresh cherry, nice zip of acidity, baking spices, fragrant wood, a little milk chocolate. Finished w/a little cooked meat. Medium weight, a little thin. Probably not worth the price to me - there are other Riojas in the same price range or cheaper that I much prefer - but good. 89.

One of my favorite Finger Lakes Rieslings! Modest gold color. Subtle petrol on the nose. Medium plus depth and nice balance between sweetness and tartness. Could use some more zip but my guess is that it is just past prime drinking age. Awesome QPR. — 5 years ago

Watson Ranch Chardonnay 2017

Delectable Wine
9.3

The 2017 Chardonnay Watson Ranch is a gorgeous wine. Apricot, chamomile, dried flowers, sage and dried pear are all laced together in this super-expressive, inviting Chardonnay. Readers should be prepared to cellar the 2017, as it is quite closed today. Bright saline notes add freshness and zip to this super-expressive Chardonnay.
