Friday the 13th: Find Good Luck in Great Wine

It’s Friday and it’s the 13th, so you know what that means…If you’re superstitious, do not open any umbrellas inside, avoid walking under ladders, and try your hardest not to shatter any mirrors. If you love all things scary, then maybe you’ll spend your Friday watching the ten thousand films in the Friday the 13th movie franchise. Whether you are superstitious, skeptical, or couldn't care less about Friday the 13th, it's still Friday, and that means you should definitely be drinking wine. We recommend grabbing a bottle from your favorite region and make sure it’s the 2013 vintage. Looking for a goth wine to match the energy for today? Dom Pérignon

Brut Champagne Blend 2013

Amazing what a good champagne can taste like at 11 years. Completely fresh and crisp with just a slight softness. Delicious! As far as value, let’s not go there. — 5 months ago

Dominus Estate

Napanook Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2013

After pop-n-pour: not giving much. Clenched, reticent.
After two hours this is still tight, but starting to show blackberries, black cherries, smoke, cedar and ink.
Approachable, better to wait a few more years and let it turn into something beautiful.

Philip Togni Vineyard

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

This is undoubtedly next level but still in its larval stage. The youngest Togni I’ve opened and I consumed it solo over 2 days of the weekend. Much more expressive on day 2. Black cherry, cacao and saddle leather are there but it is reluctant right now. I’m not a score guy but I believe AG or RP gave this 100 points. Hold for a minimum of 10 years if you have the patience and space. Don’t get me wrong it is very good, it just hasn’t developed yet in to what makes his wines so damn special. — 7 years ago

Louis Roederer

Cristal Brut Rosé Champagne Blend 2013

Delectable Wine
9.9

Tasted from magnum, the 2013 Cristal Rosé is ravishing. Dense, creamy and powerful, the 2013 captures all the qualities of the vintage, specifically the interplay of rich fruit from the warm summer and cooler inflections from a year that started late and ended late with a rare October harvest. Today, the 2013 is deep and beautifully seamless, but it is also young – far too young to be at its best. Dosage is 6.5 grams per liter, a bit less than for the standard bottlings, a decision taken to balance longer aging on the lees and a bit more residual sugar that is always left in the magnums after fermentation. Readers who can find the 2013 in magnum will experience one of the greatest thrills in wine. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, March 2024)
