Bernard Burgaud

Côte-Rôtie Syrah 2015

Deep purple with medium intensity, developing aromas of grilled meat, smoke, blackberry, black pepper, mint, tar and forest floor. Dry, medium (+) acidity, medium tannins, medium (+) body, medium alcohol (13.5%).
Well-integrated flavors of blackberry, black plum, tar, mint, forest floor, black olive. Medium (+) finish. Very good quality - drink now but has potential for aging. Very approachable.

Les Athlètes du Vin

Chinon Cabernet Franc 2017

A very smooth Chinon Cab Franc. A bright pale red in the glass, I was sensing subtle hints of green pepper on the nose with some playful blackberry, cassis and violet on the palate. I enjoyed this wine with a fabulous burger at Toronto’s outstanding Aloette restaurant. How do you say a “magnifique” pairing!? — 5 years ago

Yehuda

Reserve Judean Hills Dry Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

A fruit forward Cabernet Sauvignon from Israel.

Showing black fruits with earth, wood, spices, vegetables, light vanilla, tobacco, peppercorn, espresso, chocolates and bell pepper.

Full bodied, smooth and elegant, with medium plus acidity and long legs.

Nice length on the finish with round tannins and tangy raspberries.

Very enjoyable by itself or with food. Needs a couple of hours to open up properly and show some tannins.

Could use a few more years in the bottle to mature and remove some of the vegetable notes.

I had it a couple of years ago and it was very austere, now it is very drinkable although still young.

Aged for 24 months in New French oak barrels.

14% alcohol by volume.

91 points.

$45.

Once & Future Wines

Bedrock Vineyard Zinfandel 2017

I wish more Zinfandel could be made like this. While this is just a baby, it’s already delivering so much pleasure. Very primary with bright red fruits and spices. Good acid. Long finish. A few years in the cellar will do these wonders and there’s no reason to doubt the Bedrock bottle will have the ability to age gracefully for well over a decade. Such an exciting project from Joel Patterson and looking forward to trying more!! — 5 years ago

Clos de Chacras

Gran Estirpe Malbec 2004

Last bottle of the Gran Estirpe, Malbec from Argentina. This go around decanted for 2 hours. Dark and red cherries, blueberries, cassis followed by musky wood and smoke. Vibrant acidity with cranberry candy finish and mild white peppers. soft to medium chewy tannin. The tannin doesn’t linger along the cheeks and tongue just quite enough, similar to the last bottle (but now I’m knit picking). Overall, decanting for over 2 hours definitely enhanced the flavour profile and allowed for greater appreciation of the wine’s complexity. Alcohol content 14.5%. Served with homemade red Thai chicken curry. — 5 years ago

Soil Specific Sauvignon Blanc 2017

Ron R
9.5

With spring in the air, it’s time to get your SB on.
We were expecting 17 vintage to be a bust, but these guys proved us wrong. The nose is incredible with jasmine, honeysuckle and white flowers. Palate reveals nectarines and lemon and quince. So structured on the palate with bright acidity, and complimentary sweetness. Finishes with verve and urgency. Wifey gave it a 95. Who am I to argue...

@David L grabbed three off the bottling truck. Sadly for the cellar, they didn’t make it back from Mexico 😜

Backus Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2005

If I was to identify a North Coast California vintage that is a “go to” right now I’d select the ‘05 without reservation, I’ve had so many spectacular samples lately and I’m smitten. This Backus was just singing tonight. Gorgeous, powerful multi dimensional nirvana. — 5 years ago
