Hugel et Fils

Gentil Alsace Sylvaner Blend 2018

Solid. Perfumed and beautiful round with a shimmering minerality and a touch of sweetness. The kind of wine you want to get snowed in a cabin with, which I did eating a big bowl of beans & parmesan broth. — 3 years ago

Vérité

La Joie Sonoma County Red Blend 2008

Color - dark red with some bricking. Beautiful nose—Dark cherry black-blueberry fruits with scents of vanilla cream, pine, cedar lingering menthol. Taste is intense and full bodied! The structure of the wine speaks for itself— a blast of blackberry fruit and cassis, tobacco, chocolate and crushed gravel with a pepper-graphite long finish. Tannins are present but light. Flavors are well integrated and pleasing to the pallet. Pairs well with aged cheddar cheese and pepper salami softening the wine and bringing out other flavors of subtle vanilla, dark red plum and cedar. — 3 years ago

Château Léoville Poyferré

Saint Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2010

Cleaning up my empty bottles (early spring cleaning)- this was probably the best wine I’ve had during the pandemic. Might have been April when I drank this and the details are fuzzy but the feeling of happiness remains clear — 3 years ago

Domaine Henri Boillot

Clos de la Mouchère Monopole Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Chardonnay 2015

Pale Lemon in colour. Initial notes of honey and citrus. Refreshing and balanced with M minus acid, good intensity and noticeable minerality. The balance is exceptional with the oak perfectly integrated. An excellent wine but not raving, and sorry for being parochial, but there are many Australian Chardonnays I would rate as high, if not higher, at half the price although I do like Henri Boillot white burgundies. — 3 years ago

@Aravind A Thanks re your comments. Probably the best of the lot and latest vintage of the Leeuwin Art Series Chardonnay is about to be released. The 2018 was a great vintage in Margaret River. In that district I would include Vasse Felix Heytesbury, Pierro, Cullen Kevin John, Xanadu, Woodlands Chloe, Cape Mentelle, Voyager Estate. In the eastern states Penfolds Yattarna and Bin 311,Bindi, Oakridge 864, Shaw and Smith M3, Giant Steps, Giaconda, Savaterre and Sorrenberg. Tasmania look for Tolpuddle. Just a brief cross section.

@Aravind A i would imagine the Penfolds Chardonnays would be available. On another them Penfolds have just released their first Californian reds. At least one is a blend with Australian fruit. 4 different reds released ranging in price from $90 to $950 AUD.

Domaine Lionnet

Gamey, smokey, brambly fruit with soft tannin... it transports me.... Perfect with some earthy caviar lentils 🙌🏾 — 3 years ago

Château Suduiraut

Sauternes Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend 2017

👁 This wine was medium gold with strong tearing and thick viscosity.

👃On the nose this wine had a pronounced intensity of youthful aromas. Aromas included dried apricot, ripe peach, ripe cantaloupe, honeysuckle, white blossom, beeswax, and lavender honey notes.

👄 On the palate this wine was sweet. It had medium acidity, a full body, high alcohol, and pronounced intensity of flavors consistent with the nose. The finish was long.

This was an excellent wine paired with an assortment of desserts. It has potential for further aging.

Chateau Suduiraut, Premier Cru Classé en 1855, Sauternes. Vintage 2017. ABV 14%.

Tommaso Bussola

Ca' del Laito Valpolicella Ripasso Superiore Corvina Blend 2016

One of the January ‘21 selections from Verve Wine’s Grand Tour subscription. Takes me back to Italy - like a great house wine this is better than the price point. Verve says go with pork ragu but we did Berkeley’s Cheese Board veggie pizza and it’s all there, it quenches and you want more, a perfect dinner wine. Love it. — 3 years ago

7 Deadly Red Lodi Red Blend 2016

Lodi California red blend. Medium-long legs and deep, dark opaque color. Smells lovely, cherry, spice and chocolate. Smooth, lightly spicy at first. Not much tannin in the finish but it has a nice, deep fruit flavor. — 3 years ago
