A sappy red fruited slightly savoury perfume…stewed fruits. Reminds me of those Western Australia Pinot characteristics. I used to buy Moss Wood Pinot where the fruit came from Pemberton if I recall correctly. This WA Pinot from Mount Barker, we bought at the winery a few years ago reminds me of the old Moss Wood Pinots. I don’t think this is a cellaring proposition but it is tasting great at 6 years old. On the 2nd night a whiff of honeycomb from the oak. — 2 years ago

We bought this at the cellar door in Mt Barker WA in early January on a trip over there before COVID hit and state borders were closed. First of 6. Dark Ruby in colour. Very peppery on nose and palate with touches of cinnamon - fruit is in the plum spectrum. Drinking this rather young - it will develop more complexity. Dense Ruby. Black Pepper, dried herbs and dried meat. Not all savoury - also a nice sweetness- plum and other dark fruits. I noticed my notes when I first tasted this at the winery Cellar Door in Christmas 2019 - “My kind of Shiraz”. Outstanding. Trophy for best West Australian Red at Royal Perth Wine Show; 96 points from Ray Jordan. Had another bottle 30 weeks later on 3rd July 2026 with consistent notes. I followed this with a bottle of Trinity Hill Homage from NZ which really was black pepper. Comparing side by side the Forest Hill was really white pepper. Both great wines. — 8 months ago

Initially oaky notes which blew off after a while. Black and blue fruits, a gingery note with stacks of black pepper. A genuine cool climate Syrah - possibly NZ’s premium Syrah and certainly one of my favourite Syrahs. Black pepper and spice bordering on profound palate intensity. Very northern Rhone - excellent. I don’t know how available this is overseas but it’s worth seeking out. An interesting back story: The winemaker, John Hancock, who worked the harvest at Jaboulet in 1996 received Syrah cuttings from the Hermitage Hill as a gift from Gerard Jaboulet. Hancock planted them in 2001 and now, in good vintages, uses the fruit for Homage. Scents of potpourri, lavender and wild thyme “. I totally agree. I had a 2nd bottle 40 weeks later on 29th March 2025. Very good - seems more peppery than usual. I had a 3rd bottle on 11/10/25. Leaner on the mid palate than I recall. White pepper very much in evidence. I can’t see this putting on weight in the coming years. Next in a year or so. 4th bottle on 4th July 2026 matched with a Forest Hill Mount Barker 2017 which had white pepper notes. This Trinity Hill had definitely black pepper notes. — 2 years ago

A label new to me I bought at a Downs Club tasting. A little funk on the nose with almonds and under ripe stone fruit. Impressive if not a little light on the palate with the nose carrying through on to the palate. On the 2nd day this had filled out finishing with a saline minerality. Medium plus intensity and length. Proves once again that the Adelaide Hills is an exceptional area for Chardonnay - think Shaw and Smith M3 Chardonnay. — 4 years ago
