Rabajà Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2018

Fully mature, it’s got a very light color. Super fragrant, with the Nebbie fruit in the background now behind earth and fragrant mahogany library furniture and faded roses. Very classic flavors. Good flavor intensity, nice balance. A prickle of alcoholic heat in the finish is the only (minor) criticism. — 19 days ago

Rabaja is a highly respected cru. I feel like many Barolos and Barbarescos these days just don’t age like the wine from the 70s and 80s. While modernization of winemaking there has resulted in fewer faulty wines and greater consistency, I feel like ageability in general has diminished. A huge generalization, I know, but that’s my feeling. Also, there’s the subjective element. Since I tend to prefer younger wines, maybe a taster without that preference would perceive this as not yet fully mature.

@Doug Powers @Tom Casagrande gonna chime in here since I’m not only familiar with this producer (Rosenthal’s portfolio these days) and vintage (generally an earlier drinking vintage). These wine are traditionally made and built to last. As Tom mentioned, Rabaja is one of the most heralded MGA’s in Barbaresco but we’re talking about a vintage that’s really lovely to drink now through 2033 in most cases.

@Tom Casagrande, thanks, interesting thoughts about whether these Barbaresco/Barolo wines age as well as they used to (or are even made to age as well)?? I really don’t purchase these wines any longer due to my predilection to age them, so I appreciate both your comments and @Jay Kline comments about the producer and vintage. And, I do want to emphasize (clarify?) that I am NOT in any way suggesting that I don’t like/appreciate younger wines as well — I DO — but after 45 years of buying more wine than we consume, which started because when I was starting out in NYC, I was friends with older friends who had older wines, and I loved how they tasted, but I also knew I couldn’t afford to purchase 20-25 year old wines in any quantity, so I built my cellar the slow, patient way (and of course the few times I purchased older wines at auction/retail, I inevitably learned the importance of provenance)!!

Rocche di Castelletto Barolo Nebbiolo 2015

Deep Ruby color with a bouquet of fruit, earthy herbs and floral notes. On the palate flavors of sour cherry and raspberry with notes of herb pepper, floral and earthy notes. Medium+ finish, ok balance with fine tannins ending with cacao, fruit and earthy nutty notes. Drink now! — 5 months ago

Guado al Tasso Bolgheri Superiore Red Bordeaux Blend 2021

2021 vintage. Decanted and tasted after 45 mins. Chunky and decently power-laden. Hints of finesse here and there. Much too much too early obvs but time, space and the FLB (Friday Lunch Boys) demanded a sacrificial lamb. The oracle at Delphi was on a lunch break apparently so no tea leaves or entrails read but this needs at least 3-4 years to divine the future. 08.15.25. — 6 days ago

Cascina Dardi-Bussia Riserva Barolo Nebbiolo

What a wonderful wine! Elegant and elevated with light cherry, rose perfume, baking spice and tobacco flavors. Seems full of life 17 years after harvest and absolutely sang with grilled lamb chops. — 25 days ago

Barolo Nebbiolo 2019

Tasted blind . Slightly cloudy, quite light garnet and wide garnet rim . Slightly funky on the nose , slightly deeper darker fruits , quite light in frame , slightly ethereal . Wild strawberry , raspberry , light herbal hints . Quite reserved and elegant on the palate , quite light tannins , fresh acidity . Slightly simple , but ok length finish. I would drink this now and over the next 5 -8 years. — 5 months ago

Tenuta Guado al Tasso Bolgheri Vermentino 2024

Has Vermentino fallen out of favour with Italians and is being replaced by a taste for Chardonnay?
Maybe but I don't want to believe it yet.
On hot summer days there is not much more refreshing than a well chilled glass of Vermentino. Chilled is a must - it still has enough oomph in the nose to release its floral essence. Once it comes up to room temp it can be overwhelmingly perfumey IMHO. Good acid balance.
I'm pretty convinced that you can trust anything from Fontori to be a solid choice.

Rio Sordo Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2020

Ruby in color with light intensity and a wide reddish rim.

Fruity nose of red currants, cherries, earth, black coffee, chocolates, chalk and light oak.

Medium bodied with medium acidity.

Dry on the palate with red fruits, earth, light wood, spices, coffee, dark chocolates, vegetables, herbs and black tea.

Medium finish with round tannins and tangy raspberries.

This is a very tasty Barbaresco. Easy drinking and elegant, but not as smooth as I expected it to be.

This 5 year old feels like it needs more time in the bottle to mature properly. Will continue to age nicely in the next 10 to 15 years. Would be nice to revisit it in 5 years.

This Single Vineyard Nebbiolo is complex and interesting. Good by itself and better with food.

100% Nebbiolo grapes were aged for 2 years in large oak barrels. A small production of only 3,500 bottles.

14% alcohol by volume.

91 points.

$80.
