Château La Fleur Calon

Château Calon-Ségur

Le Marquis Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 2015

It is time for some Merlot on this #MerlotThursday. Let's bring Merlot back!

Dark ruby in color with a wide reddish rim.

Fruity nose of blueberries, currants, plums, tobacco leaf, cedar, licorice, light vanilla and black pepper.

Medium plus in body and smooth, with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry on the palate with black currants, blueberries, plums, cooked cherries, spices, light cedar, licorice, chocolates, dark coffee, herbs and black peppers.

Long finish with round tannins and tangy cherries.

This is a delicious Merlot blend from Saint Estephe. Rich, smooth and elegant.

This second wine from the Third Growth Chateau is showing nice complexity and a soft mouthfeel.

Good right out of the bottle, and better with airtime.

This 10 year old is drinking beautifully now, and will continue to age nicely in the next 10 years.

A great sipping wine. Plush and fruit forward.

A blend of 57% Merlot, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc. Aged for 17 months in (50% new) French Oak barrels.

13.5% alcohol by volume.

92 points.

Château La Fleur-Pétrus

Pomerol Red Bordeaux Blend

We found the wine is no longer what it used to be. Very modern vinification and upbringing, lots of new wood, and likely a malolactic in barrel. Well done but nothing like in the Jean-Claude Berrouet days. — a month ago

Calon’s third, but still very classic left bank! Bramble berries, cedar, a hint of graphite. Right in the sweet spot! — 3 months ago

Château Calon-Ségur

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 1989

1989 vintage. From magnum. Nice fill and cork better than expected. Not decanted and first tasted after 7 (seven!!) hours after opening. Talk about task saturation...Light body with some brickish notes but back end concentration along with dark cherry and plum notes fronting earth + tobacco histories. Good length of finish. Drink whatever format ya got cuz it's definitely time unless you like playing wine pathologist and reconstituting tissue/flavors to flesh out what once was and rebuilding around the existing skeleton. Eminently doable as long as you're intimately familiar with the producer/wine, have previously tasted the wine and have really good notes/memory. 05.11.25. — 11 days ago

Château La Fleur de Boüard

Lalande de Pomerol Red Bordeaux Blend 2000

Opened just prior to service; enjoyed over the course of a few hours. As far as I know, this was the first commercially released vintage of La Fleur de Boüard but others may be able to confirm or deny that. The 2000 pours a deep garnet color with an opaque core; medium+ viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of ripe dark fruits: back plums, cassis, pipe tobacco, Flintstones vitamins, purple flowers, dried green herbs organic earth and fine baking spices. “Yabba dabba doo!” On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannins and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+. Gosh, this is in a really lovely place right now; very well balanced! Thank Andy! Drink now through 2040. — 9 days ago

Château Mourgues du Gres

Fleur d'Eglantine Costières-de-Nîmes Rosé 2023

The description: Fleur d’Eglantine gets its name from its acidulous freshness and its luminous colour, reminiscent of the petals of the wild roses that surround our vinyards. It’s a delicate rosé, airy and acidic, which unites floral aromas and crunchy red berries. Grape Grenache mixed with Mourvèdre and a dash of Syrah

The opinion: Brilliant value for this depth of flavour. I am off to buy a case of….no more said!
