Domaine Jean-Louis Chave

Saint-Joseph Syrah 2021

This bottle had been opened the night before. The 2021 pours a deep ruby/purple color with a near opaque core; medium viscosity with significant staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of tart and ripe black and red fruits: mixed brambles, purple flowers, olives, black pepper, stony earth and a mix of cool and warm spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannin and medium+ acidity. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+ and peppery. True to the vintage, this is a cooler expression of Chave’s Saint Joseph and I really dig it. Drink now through 2041. — 2 months ago

La Porte Saint Jean La Perlée Anjou-Saumur Chenin Blanc 2021

Really had a craving for a high acid white in the spring sun! This is from 90+ year old vines from the Saumur region. Upon opening there was a lot of sediment/turbidity and even some residual co2, which quickly blew off. I smell a beautiful dusty marzipan chenin nose. On the palate this has citrus, marzipan, a little peach and a popcorn like reduction. Obviously enough acidity. A little oxidation which adds to the complexity of the marzipan flavors. Gained balance after 30 minutes. Next bottle in a year or so if I can keep my hands off them. — 2 days ago

30 years old and still bringing it. Drank with my blushing bride of 51 years on Valentine’s Day. It was a good choice. Both. — 3 months ago

Clos Saint Jean

Deus Ex Machina Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2022

Reddish in color with medium intensity.

Pretty and complex nose, and medium plus in body with medium acidity.

Dry on the palate with raspberries, cherries, spices, very light oak, licorice and chocolates.

Long finish with fine grained tannins and cherries.

This is a beautiful red blend from Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Elegant and nicely balanced. Rich and fruit forward. Very fresh tasting, and easy drinking.

Still young, but already complex and interesting. The high alcohol is well integrated already.

Good right out of the bottle, and better with airtime. Will continue to age nicely in the next 10 to 15 years.

A blend of destemmed grapes from over 100 year old vines. 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvedre. The Grenache is aged in concrete vats, while the Mourvedre is aged in new French oak barrels.

16% alcohol by volume.

92 points.

$125.
