One of the better champagnes I’ve had in a while and I don’t usually like champagnes. — 25 days ago

Quite young looking lemon , just a hint of gold . very fine bubbles , that dissipate quiet quickly in a white wine glass . Lots of roasted nuts , toasted bread , caramel , and a oyster shell , caramelised lemon peel , saffron , lemongrass and a hint of curry . On the palate this has more of the caramel notes , with saffron , some lemon, mineral a quite tight , slightly astringent acidity and mineral finish. Not overly intense but quite good length , with mineral , oyster shell , toasty , brioche finish . This is fully mature and is at peak in magnum , drink now and over the next 5 -10 years . They are the King’s of Champagne for a reason.
Beautiful mousse. Both yellow & white stone fruits, tropicals, lime & lemon zest/pulp, green & red apple, cream to whipped cream, ginger skin, grey volcanics-limestone minerals, white spice, taunt chalk, baguette crust, sea fossils/foam, white spring flowers, yellow lilies, excellent acidity, balance, structure, tension & elegance for days with a finish that ends balanced on fruit & minerality.

The Grand Cuvée 170ème is based on the 2014 vintage (which comprises about 55% of the final blend) with the remainder being reserve vintages going back to 1998. Popped and poured; enjoyed two bottles from the same source back to back with consistent results (because it was so damned good and YOLO). The 170ème pours a straw color with persistent mousse. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of tart and ripe orchard fruit with some autolytic and charming oxidative notes: green apple, citrus, lemon curd, toasted brioche, hazelnuts and chalky minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with high acid (but balanced by the fruit and non-fruit). Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and the texture is creamy. There such a deft balance of acid and richness that Krug arguably does better than anyone; at least consistently. Always a banger. Drink now through 2039. Disgorged Summer of 2021. — 6 days ago
