Sailor Seeks Horse

Tasmania Pinot Noir 2022

Certainly in the conversation as to the quirkiest producer name. From the d’Entrecasteaux Peninsula south of Hobart where there are other big names in Tassie Pinot like Home Hill Estate. No specific notes but these wines have that trademark voluminous mouth feel you get from this terroir - surprisingly for the cool/cold climate. Red and black fruits. Delicious is an overused descriptor but there is no other word to describe this. — 20 days ago

@Bob McDonald there’s an interesting back story written by the vineyard owners about the name “There was a handwritten sign on the wall at the Red Velvet Lounge in Cygnet, our local coffee and cake respite from the Tasmanian weather. It said, “Sailor Seeks Horse” and went on to explain that the author had sailed solo around the world and ridden across the US from coast to coast and back again. On a mule. He’d then decided he wanted to travel around Tasmania by horse but didn’t have one. So, was there anyone who would lend him one? If they didn’t have a horse then a pony would do.”
Actually Bernie Herberts couldn’t acquire a four legged friend and bought a $10 bike at the local tip and rode it around Tasmania. Bernie has written a number of books about his travels.

@David White Thanks for the back story David.

Tolpuddle Vineyard

Tasmania Pinot Noir 2015

I have several previous Delectable notes on this brilliant wine. As fellow Delectable taster Scott Rowe said of this wine “Epic”. Sadly my last of the 2015 vintage Tolpuddle Pinot Noir. There were too many things going for it not to be a success. :-
Coal River Tasmania; Shaw and Smith Winemaking team; 2015 vintage. There were spicy red cherries on the nose. A stalky whole bunch note. (50% whole bunch fermentation). See previous notes. Every year since has been a similar success.

Tasmania Pinot Noir 2024

Pale and young. My first 2024 wine. From a reputable producer but not worth the $86 (restaurant wine list) we paid. — 24 days ago

Apsley Gorge Vineyard

Pinot Noir 2022

The 2022 Apsley Gorge Pinot Noir stands out as a smooth, Burgundy-style wine with exceptional balance. Among the best Pinot Noirs we’ve tasted in Tasmania, it offers impressive depth and elegance. — 24 days ago

Bream Creek

Tasmania Pinot Noir 2023

Really impressive weight and balance. The high pitched red fruit and savoury tones provide freshness and balance the darker brooding savoury structure. — 4 months ago
