Les Côtes de l'Ouest Syrah 2016

SV
9.0

Truly one of the best California Syrah blends out there, regardless of price. Elevage make a huge difference here — they’re selling the 2016s now. Fruit forward with plenty of garrigue and savory herbs — rosemary, tarragon, thyme. A lovely wine to buy by the case ahead of summer BBQs. — 3 years ago

Medium bodied. All the syrah notes are there. Nice elevage. Really pleasant to drink today. — 4 years ago

Domaine Guillot-Broux

Beaumont Mâcon-Cruzille Gamay 2017

A gamay in the Burgundian style structured by a marked elevage with toasted oaky notes. (very well done). The fruit is not highlighted. Since gamay does not have the same vertical depth as Pinot Noir, the primary characteristics are a little behind.

Envinate

Lousas Viñas de Aldea Mencía 2017

Well well well, isn’t that something! Envinate Lousas Vinos de Aldea. Give it some time in the glass to unwind and expose its inner complexity, a vibrant red fruit profile, lavender and capsicum is accompanied by a pronounced savoriness with crushed rocks, soil and white pepper. A fresh spine runs through the palate with solid but fine grained grip from the tannins. Ribeira Sacra. Mostly Mencia with some other stuff thrown in (field blend), whole cluster ferment in cement tank followed by elevage in neutral barrel. A privilege to have these unicorn wines available! — 6 years ago

Voglar Alto Adige Sauvignon 2015

Stunningly good cool climate SB. Crystalline and pure, zippy and intense minerality. Great weight, styled like a classic Sancerre or Pouilly Fume. Long elevage. Chestnut and acacia. Vineyards sit on the slopes above apple orchards. Very steep terrain. Phoenollically ripe. Delicious. — 7 years ago

Domaine Cecile Tremblay

— 8 years ago

School House Vineyard

Spring Mountain District Chardonnay 2019

Visited the vineyards with Tim Mosher on a hot late summer day at noon - Sep 3 2022. Drove through and tasted berries from the OG ungrafted DRC vines, old and new Pinot Noir vines, Grenache, Syrah and Carignan vines. It was a blast.

Barrel fermented, 10 months aging on lees which were stirred once a week, full malo. Yearly contract with Pride Mountains for making wine. Since 1996. 13.2% abv. Yellow delicious apples and other stone fruits, hazelnut, stony characters, butterscotch, Brioche, lemon curd, yeasty sea salt, smoke and flint. A mix of new Francis Fevre medium toast barrels (they get 12 new barrels every year) and 1 year old barrels from Pride Mountains. Ever since 2016 elevage was down to 10 months (instead of 18 months) for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Côte de Léchet Chablis 1er Cru Chardonnay 2006

Blinded. The classic aromas were instantly revealing of the appellation, but the vintage was well-hidden behind the remarkable acidity. I felt the 06' exoticism was well-honed in here, which is perhaps a function of long elevage balancing any hint of fruit ripeness with layers of lees-derived texture. Intensely saline finish. Impressive and a strong case for long aging/late domaine releases. — 5 years ago

'Un' Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 2013

Willamette valley pinot like I like them (hell no they are not all like this...)

Light and fruit forward, but also wild, spicy and smokey. Oak elevage just at the right balance. Not too marked.

Yum, can drink a lot of this!

Rosso Di Valtellina Chiavennasca 2004

BTG Compline, dusty, mushroom, dried flowers, dried herbs, nervy red fruit and racing acid. Love the tension this has given its extended elevage. — 7 years ago

Domaine Denis Mortet

Cuvée de Noble Souche Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2012

Pattes Loup (Thomas Pico)

Vent d'Ange Chablis Chardonnay 2017

Always a textural interpretation of Chablis, the ‘17 rendition of the Vent d’Ange has developed even better than I expected. There is a real salinity that balances out the depth that comes from a long elevage and extended lees contact. — 4 years ago

Château Troplong Mondot

St. Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2012

Riktigt kraftig och djupt koncentrerad. Lite flamboyant. Modernare tolkning av St Emilion och högra stranden, men med tydlig merlot-karaktär. Mycket elevage som hålls upp av frukten. Mörk bärighet, svart tryffel, cigarrlåda… — 4 years ago

Chimney Rock

Elevage Red Wine 2017

A blend of mainly Merlot (73%) with smaller portions Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot, the 2017 ‘Elevage’ was aged for eighteen months in 100% new French oak prior to bottling. Pretty red cherry aromatics connect with shades of cocoa powder and tar that all take shape in the glass. The mouthfeel and silky texture of the wine is truly outstanding. Layers of espresso bean and creosote connect with the bright red fruits and minerals that keep this wine shiningly brightly. The long dark fruit and mineral-driven finish lingers. Drink 2020-2035- 92

Bodegas Licinia

Vinos de Madrid Syrah Blend 2014

A souvenir brought from the interesting project Bodegas Licinia in Madrid. With some imagination you’ll find some Super Tuscany resemblance with a ripe dark fruit and floral profile with a good energy and well placed portion of oak. Hefty on the alcohol, but well embedded on the palate, with a solid intensity of ripe, yet fresh fruit, and a nice developing persistence on the palate. Good stamina throughout a solid finish.
With Cabernet Sauvignon the intension is to provide structure to the blend and yes it works; 50% Temperanillo 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Syrah and 5% Merlot. Elevage in french oak Barrique oak barriques.
