Just a gorgeous nose. Sweet, ripe but never treacly cherries. Mid season. Birthday cake. Cranberry skin. Poised and detailed. Wow this is a 9.6 nose. So nimble yet expressive. Huge finesse and refinement and that classic 21 achy beauty. My goodness this is so elegant. Barely any tannin and needs some time to develop but this is very fine. Palate is complex and so fine. It’s been 16 months since last bottle of this Gargiulo G Major 7. One of my early Napa favorites. Fruit is ripe and bountiful, dark red and black. Very nicely balanced, acidity is very much holding its own, tannins are soft yet still structured. Gravely, vanilla, licorice, pencil shavings. Nice finish. I took this bottle from my cellar to a friend who just received his complete allocation of 2022 Wendouree. We obviously compared this 2011 Shiraz Mataro with the latest 2022. If this exercise proved one thing that was that any cuvée of Wendouree should not be opened at under 10 years of age. The 2011 had a gorgeous nose of blackberry, liquorice and spice…..intoxicating! Whereas the 2022 was as tight as a drum…giving very little. The palate was fluid and smooth with those same aromatics coming through on the palate with that amazing old vine opulence and persistence.
